Windows Hosting - Comparison Between DotNetNuke and WordPress

clock March 6, 2013 10:08 by author andy_yo

In the present market, a vast array of contenders in the CMS arena (Content Management Systems) are competing neck to neck; so selecting the best choice that precisely suits the requirements of your project, might be a tricky job. In the present article, we would like to provide a complete synopsis of 2 of the well-known products, namely WordPress and DotNetNuke (DNN) so as to assist you in choosing the best option.

About ASPHostPortal.com

ASPHostPortal.com is Microsoft No #1 Recommended Windows and ASP.NET Spotlight Hosting Partner in United States. Microsoft presents this award to ASPHostPortal.com for ability to support the latest Microsoft and ASP.NET technology, such as: WebMatrix, WebDeploy, Visual Studio 2012, ASP.NET 4.5, ASP.NET MVC 4.0, Silverlight 5 and Visual Studio Lightswitch. Basic Info about the two CMS

DNN is basically an open source platform based on ASP.Net structure that is developed mainly to create dynamic websites and also provide many web applications. It has been an instant success since its initial launch, with the open community edition only being deployed in not less than 600,000 websites around the world.

On the other hand, WordPress is a MySQL and PHP-based framework, which is mainly used for blogging. It is one of the most widely acknowledged CMS platforms in the present world, but don’t feel that it’s only meant for blogging – today, millions of corporate websites and e-commerce stores are also powered by WordPress. WordPress Self-Hosting blogs are considered as main constraints. Choosing the best WordPress Hosting solution offers the desired results of your prediction. If you looking to make Web Development as your career, then it is the best time to choose Web Development as your career option.

Disparities in Underlying Technology

Both WordPress and DNN applications are developed based on open source, which clearly implies that both platforms can be liberally extended by your own highly-skilled development team. The chief dissimilarity between these two platforms is that WordPress is written using PHP, while in contrast, DNN is written using Visual Basic.Net.

As LAMP technology piles have started to widely use across the web, especially inside shared hosting atmospheres, it is most likely that WordPress would be much cheaper and easier to install.

Windows-based servers usually tend to be expensive, but DNN’s potential to interface with NTLM based windows authentication and Active directory makes it a supreme pick for use in many domain-based systems, including intranet websites.

Comparing Important Features

Wordpress was developed as an extremely simple blogging system, while DNN was designed to handle more complex web applications. This very fact is clearly reflected in the standard features that can be seen in both platforms.

DNN comes integrated with some special options including resizing and mass uploading, while in the case of WordPress, some additional add-ons need to be installed to perform those functions. DNN offers other features including macro/templating languages, prototyping, and zip archives, whereas you can’t find all these options built in WordPress, and it is gradually included all these functionalities over time. For instance, the 2.9 edition of WordPress has come with an Undo function, which was missing in its previous edition.

If you are looking forward to build a potentially huge scale website, then WordPress clearly lacks some of the basic important features that are very essential. Performance management features including load balancing and database application are considered as the fundamental parts of DotNetNuke, while WordPress fails to provide all these options.

Comparing Security Standards

Since its existence, WordPress has been constantly overwhelmed by many security-related issues, whereas the DNN has had only 7-security related queries, and all of which have been resolved now.

DNN provides excellent SSL logins and session management services than WordPress. So, from the security perspective, DNN would be an ideal choice as against WordPress.

The Bottom Line

On the whole, both DNN and WordPress are regarded as feasible choices for developing a new site, be it personal or business. With its light-weight design framework, WordPress is an ideal choice only for small-scale websites and blogs. On the other hand, DNN may be slightly expensive and difficult to install initially, but with its extensive set of security and standard features, it makes a better choice for large-scale website needs.

DotNetNuke Hosting - DotNetNuke versus Joomla

clock February 5, 2013 05:45 by author andy_yo

DotNetNuke and Joomla are two very popular CMS (Content Management Systems) based on different technologies. DotNetNuke is a content management system written in Visual Basic and based on the Asp.Net framework, whereas Joomla is based on the popular PHP framework. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages which we will discuss further in detail.

Click here for more information

Core Functionality: DNN offers extensive core functionalities in front of which Joomla seems a little weak. DNN offers features like database replication, event management, photo gallery and built-in forum system. Joomla also offers various functionalities that are not available in any other PHP based CMS, such as load balancing and a trash bin to ensure that articles are not accidentlly deleted. However, Joomla still falls short of DNN in context of their core functionalities.

Customization and Extensions: Joomla compensates the lack of core functionalities by allowing extensive third party plugins and customization facilities. Joomla provides a core framework around which developers can develop any site with desired functionalities. There is a plugin available for everything in Joomla therefore extra functionality can be added and customized according to client's requirements. Moreover, vast number of templates are available on the internet from which developers can chose the suitable themes and customize them according to their needs.

However, the template designs in Joomla are often based upon similar layouts which usually end up in the development of too many similar looking websites with slight changes in the design and color. DNN however offers a high level of flexibility thus provides an opportunity to create unique websites.

Basic Technology: Both Joomla and DotNetNuke are built upon different technologies which makes it essential to take their technical differences into account. Joomla uses technologies like PHP and MySQL backend which are extensively used for web development and web application development. On the other hand, DotNetNuke uses technically superior Asp.net framework from Microsoft which is too expensive for regular web-hosting environment. However, small and medium businesses usually have servers running on Microsoft's IIS which eliminates the open source advantage of Joomla.

DotNetNuke is more useful and feasible for corporate and enterprise intranets which require to integrate with the existing systems that are usually built using the same technology. They require sophistication, flexibility and robustness which are offered by DNN and can also be easily afforded by enterprises. Whereas, Joomla is designed to provide quick, expandable and cost effective web presence.

Support: The DotNetNuke offers extensive support depending upon the edition you have. The basic version provides developers forum through which users can get assistance from various other developers active on the forum. The paid "professional" version offers unlimited online support whereas the "Elite" edition provides live telephonic support with response under 2 hours. Joomla does not provide paid support system but there are various third party organizations offering training and support for Joomla.

The paid versions of DotNetNuke, i.e. "professional" and "elite" version are extensively tested and verified officially which makes them a good choice for business applications that require stability and perfectness.

Ease of Usage: DotNetNuke allows for quick and easy content editing functionality whereas in Joomla users have to first sign into a different section on the site before they can make changes to content. You can easily change the position of modules in DNN by drag and drop functionality which makes it so easier. Apart from this both the frameworks offer similar ease of use via features such as built in macro languages, ability to mass upload and search engine friendly URLs.

While comparing them we just cannot declare one better than the other as each has some advantages and disadvantages of its own. What we can say with certainty is that DotNetNuke is better for business applications and creation of business scale websites whereas Joomla is ideal for making quick, functional and cost effective web sites.

DotNetNuke Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Creating DotNetNuke SqlDataProvider Files Using SQL Server Management Studio

clock October 22, 2010 08:39 by author Jervis

Setup

Depending on your exact scripting needs you might want to configure the SQL Server Management Studio scripting options to "script drops" before the creates of stored procedures, allowing you to do a complete scripting run out of the box.  You can also work with various options to tailor the generated SQL Scripts to meet your needs.  Otherwise no special setup is needed.

Writing the Scripts

The best part about the way that I write my SQL scripts is that only slight modifications are needed to write the scripts in a manner that can be executed on any database directly from SQL Server Management Studio and then converted easily into DotNetNuke compliant scripts.  The only change that you must make is that ALL objects must be qualified with a database owner, and the object name must be surrounded in []'s.  So a stored procedure creation must be similar to "CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.[MyPrefix_InsertMyData]", this rule applies to all objects, including from clauses and joins within the stored procedures.

By doing this you have a consistent form to your scripts that still complies with the needs of a default SQL Server implementation but also allows for a very simple find and replace to prepare objects for DotNetNuke integration.  Once you have written the scripts, feel free to run them and insert the objects into a test database, this way you can truly validate that your syntax is correct and perform any other validations needed.

Creating the DotNetNuke Scripts

Once you have successfully created the scripts and validated that they are correct you can use a simple find/replace option to make the scripts DNN compliant.  You have two options when it comes to performing this step.  The first is to simply use the SQL scripts that you executed, however, those might not yet have the drop statements needed to ensure that scripts are re-usable.  The second option is to use the "Script Object As" options within SSMS to have it script the Create or Alter statements for you.  The key is to get to a point where all scripts, in their current form are inside a single document.

Once the items are in a single document simply use find/replace.  Search for "dbo.[" without the quotes and specify "{databaseOwner}[{objectQualifier}" without the quotes as the replace with text.  This will sub out the hard coded database owner and will supply the DotNetNuke tokens, making the script fully functional within the DotNetNuke module installation environment.

Conclusion

Hope this posting has helped someone with the creation of DotNetNuke module scripts. In case, you’re looking for DNN hosting, you can always go with us. We always ready to help you.

DotNetNuke 5.2 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: How to Changes to Module Create Process

clock October 18, 2010 07:55 by author Jervis

In a few of the most recent versions of DotNetNuke, major changes have been completed in the way that a user manually imports a module definition to test a manifest file.  This is specifically the process that is mentioned in my book to test a module while developing, before it has been packaged for installation on another portal.  From what we gather, the behavior might change back a bit, but for now the process is slightly different that indicated in my book.  In this blog posting we'll document the changes, and a workaround solution.

The Old Way

In the book, the documented process for importing a manifest was to go to "Host" -> "Module Definitions" then select "Import Manifest".  This option to import the manifest has been removed, therefore the instructions in the book will NOT work.

The New Way

The modifications that were included in the 5.2.x versions of DotNetNuke have made this process more complicated to complete and moved it to a new location.  We believe this is part of future plans to help improve the process.  Sadly, We didn't notice this change until individuals started writing in with complaints.  Below is a list of steps now necessary to import a module definition using the new process.

1. Navigate to Host => Module Definitions
2. From dropdown menu select, 'Create New Module'
3. Select Create Module From: Manifest
4. Owner Folder: <Not Specified>
5. Module Folder: (Put your folder here...)
6. Resource: (Put your dnn file here...)

7. Leave Add Test Page unchecked.
8. CLICK Create Module

Following these steps you will import the module definition, in the end completing the same process as what was done before with the "Import Module Definition" option
.

Hope this post can help you.

DotNetNuke Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Module Action Menu Links

clock October 11, 2010 09:02 by author Jervis

In this post we’ll walk through a few of the various options for the module action menus. In this examples, we’ll be forgoing the use of the many constructor overloads in favor of using the various properties which we think make the code more readable.

As most module developers are aware, the first step in using the Module Action Menus is to have your module implement the IActionable interface.  This interface defines a single property which returns a collection of ModuleActions.

Namespace DotNetNuke.Modules.MenuExample

  Partial Class View
    Inherits Entities.Modules.PortalModuleBase
    Implements DotNetNuke.Entities.Modules.Iactionable

    Public ReadOnly Property ModuleActions As ModuleActionCollection
      Implements ModuleActions

      Get
        Dim modActions As New ModuleActionCollection()
        ...
        Return modActions
      End Get
    End Property
  End Class

End Namespace

Inside of this property we’ll add whichever actions are appropriate for the module.  Using the module action menus, it is possible to define a JavaScript method which is called when the associated menu item is selected.  We usually use this in my own modules when we want to popup a form for the user that we have created using jQuery or some other client-side script.  This minimizes postbacks and makes for a much more responsive UI.

' JavaScript Example
Dim jsAction As New ModuleAction (ModuleContext.GetNextActionID()
With jsAction
  .Title = "JavaScript Example"
  .CommandName = ModuleActionType.AddContent
  .ClientScript = "alert('Isn\'t this cool!')"
  .Secure = Security.SecurityAccessLevel.Edit
End With
modActions.Add(jsAction)

There are times when you will want to redirect the user to some specific URL within the current site or even on another site. You might want to provide access to the latest documentation or link the user to the relevant support forum on your website. This behavior is controlled by the URL property.

' URL Example
Dim urlAction As New ModuleAction (ModuleContext.GetNextActionID())
With urlAction
  .Title = "Url Example"
  .CommandName = "redirect"
  .Url = http://www.dotnetnuke.com
  .Secure = Security.SecurityAccessLevel.Edit
End With
modActions.Add(urlAction)

While linking to a URL is good, you will probably want to open the URL in a new window so that the user doesn’t lose their place on the website where they were using your module.  To do this, just set the NewWindow property to true.

' New Window Example
Dim newAction As New ModuleAction (ModuleContext.GetNextActionID())
With newAction
  .Title = "New Window Example"
  .CommandName = "newwindow"
  .Url = "http://www.dotnetnuke.com"
  .NewWindow = True
  .Secure = Security.SecurityAccessLevel.Edit
End With
modActions.Add(newAction)

Occasionally, you will want to do some additional processing on the server-side before taking further action.  Setting the UseActionEvent will override the behavior of the URL setting and force a server side event to be triggered.

' URL Postback Example
Dim urlEventAction As New ModuleAction (ModuleContext.GetNextActionID())
With urlEventAction
  urlEventAction.Title = "Action Event Example"
  urlEventAction.CommandName = "redirect"
  urlEventAction.CommandArgument = "cancel"
  urlEventAction.Url = http://www.dotnetnuke.com
  urlEventAction.UseActionEvent = True
  urlEventAction.Secure = Security.SecurityAccessLevel.Edit
End With
modActions.Add(urlEventAction)

In order to respond to the event you will need to register an event handler in the Init event of your module control

Protected Sub Page_Init(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Init

  'Add an Action Event Handler to the Skin
  AddActionHandler(AddressOf MyActions_Click)
End Sub

Once you have registered the ActionHandler you are free to process the action using whatever business rules are appropriate for your specific module.

Private Sub MyActions_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Entities.Modules.Actions.ActionEventArgs)
  Skins.Skin.AddModuleMessage(Me, _
    String.Format(Localization.GetString("ClickMessage", LocalResourceFile), e.Action.CommandName), _
    ModuleMessage.ModuleMessageType.BlueInfo)

Select Case e.Action.CommandName.ToLowerInvariant
  Case "redirect"
    If e.Action.CommandArgument.ToLowerInvariant <> "cancel" Then
      Response.Redirect(e.Action.Url
    Else
      Skins.Skin.AddModuleMessage(Me,
        "Canceled the Redirect", _
        ModuleMessage.ModuleMessageType.YellowWarning)
        End If
  End Select
End Sub

This post highlights just a few of the hidden capabilities of the Module Action Menu. The HTML/Text module is a great place to start.

DNN Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: What You Choose? Joomla or DotNetNuke

clock July 15, 2010 07:54 by author Jervis

Joomla and DotNetNuke are only two content management systems among many; however they are often regarded as best-of-breed for their respective technology stacks. DotNetNuke is an ASP.Net CMS written in Visual Basic, while Joomla makes use of the ever-popular PHP. Continuing in the path of our previous articles , we're going to examine the two frameworks to provide an impartial view of the advantages and disadvantages of both.

DotNetNuke  was created by Shaun Walker in 2002. Based on the 'IBuySpy Portal' code Microsoft released to promote their ASP.Net framework, the application quickly acquired a large development community. Originally named the ‘IBuySpy Workshop’, the moniker was later changed to reflect the 'Nuke' suffix commonly affected by open source content management systems. The DotNetNuke Corporation was formed in 2006 to be a steering committee overseeing development of the framework which, as of July 2010, is in active use on over 600,000 websites.

Joomla  was established in August 2005 as a fork of the Mambo CMS project. Senior developers, including Andrew Eddie, were unhappy with the direction Mambo was taking. So, in an open letter   to the Mambo community, they announced their intention to form their own development team. The new project got its name from a community vote, Joomla being an anglicized form of an Arabic word meaning 'all together'. The first version of Joomla, released in September 2005, was essentially a re-branded release of Mambo 4.5.23; but since then the previous codebase has been expanded upon at an astounding pace, resulting in it becoming one of the leading PHP based content management systems. 2008 saw Joomla 1.5 released to much fanfare, as well as one of the lead developers winning a Packt award for most valued person. Today it continues to go from strength to strength, with prestigious firms like IHOP and CitiBank making use of Joomla both internally and on public facing sites.

Core Functionality: Both DNN and Joomla offer similar functionality at first glance, but it soon becomes apparent that DotNetNuke offers much more straight out of the box. Joomla supports basic functions like polls, blog layouts and a built-in search engine. It even has some more advanced options which are not available in other PHP based content management systems, for example load balancing and a trash bin to ensure articles are not deleted accidently. However, in comparison to DNN’s much wider range of built in functionality like database replication, events management and a photo gallery, the initial selection seems a little weak. The lack of a built-in forum system can particularly hurt Joomla based websites which wish to form communities, although there are plenty of forum bridges available as extensions.

Customization and Third Party Extensions
: What Joomla lacks in core functionality, it tries its best to make up for with third party extensions. The sitemaps, wikis and multilingual content which DotNetNuke supports by default are freely available as open source plugins. A common saying in the Joomla world is that 80% of any site is an add-on, which arguably means the core framework is light-weight enough to support any type of site without necessarily coming with everything and the kitchen sink installed by default. Templates for Joomla are easy to create, and this is reflected by the vast number available across the Internet. The low barrier to entry can sometimes result in wading through a morass of poorly designed themes, but higher end commercial designs are often stunningly well put together.

Where Joomla does fall down is in the flexibility it provides. Although there are add-ons for most things working with the framework can often feel restrictive, especially when it comes to design. The templating system is fairly proscriptive, and so themes tend to be orientated around similar basic layouts. DotNetNuke allows for greater freedom of expression, giving the opportunity to create a more unique site style. DNN’s assumption that most customers will have some development knowledge may put many off, but also allows for more flexibility in the same manner that Microsoft’s SQL Server is more flexible than Access.

Underlying Technology
: In any comparison between DotNetNuke and Joomla it is necessary to take into account the different technologies on which they are built. Joomla uses PHP with a MySQL backend, a combination that is prevalent in the web hosting sphere. By contrast DotNetNuke makes use of Microsoft’s ASP.Net framework which, while arguably superior on a technical level, is also more expensive to use in a shared web-hosting environment. That said many small and medium sized businesses already have servers which run Microsoft’s Internet Information Service (IIS), which nullifies the open source software stack’s price advantage.

Both Joomla and DotNetNuke can interact with LDAP based systems like Active Directory. However DNN has an advantage due to ASP.Net’s built-in membership and role providers, which allow businesses with their own development team to tie the system into their back-end more closely. Similarly the Visual Studio line of development environments makes code modification easier than most PHP based solutions. DotNetNuke is really designed for corporate intranets which need to integrate with existing systems, and is built around this kind of functionality. By contrast Joomla is more orientated towards providing a quick but expandable web presence.

Support: The DotNetNuke framework offers several different levels of support. The basic ‘Community’ edition provides assistance primarily through developer forums, while the paid-for ‘Professional’ edition offers unlimited tier 2 online and email support. The ‘Elite’ version even incorporates live phone support with a 2 hour maximum response time. Joomla’s development team does not directly offer commercial support, but a number of third-party companies have built up considerable expertise with the system. These now offer training and support in much the same way as a Microsoft certified partner could support SharePoint

The key issue which may sway business users in the direction of DNN is the fact that the professional and elite versions are officially tested and verified. This means they are guaranteed to be as stable as possible, making them a good choice for business critical applications. These versions also offer health monitoring and file integrity checking, which can ensure that potential issues can be detected and resolved early on.

E-Commerce: A qualitative evaluation  of the key success attributes for online sales sites, made for the 11th International World Wide Web conference, highlighted what had been known for a long time; security and integrity are essential for any E-Commerce website. When comparing DotNetNuke and Joomla it can be seen that both frameworks support similar basic security features, like SSL encryption and email verification. However the professional edition of DNN also supports some extra features, such as granular privileges and sandboxing, which just give it the edge over Joomla in terms of functionality. When considering past performance it’s best to turn to Secunia, an independent security consultancy which maintains a list of vulnerability assessments for close to 30,000 different pieces of software.

As of July 2010 Secunia’s website shows 28 vulnerability advisories  for Joomla, of which none are unpatched. DotNetNuke has only 7 total advisories , and similarly none unpatched. In both cases it seems that the teams are able to resolve their security issues, but the increased number of advisories for Joomla might make some business users wary of another potential zero-day exploit.

When considering actual E-Commerce functionality, all editions of DNN come with affiliate tracking and a shopping cart included as standard. By comparison Joomla supports most e-commerce functions through third-party extensions, and hence isn’t ready for Internet marketing out of the box.

Integrating some of the available shopping carts into Joomla can be difficult, and may result in them looking tacked onto the design. This likely isn’t an issue for smaller businesses just starting to dip a toe into online sales, but may become a limiting factor when looking to upgrade a few years down the line.

Ease of Use
: The inline administration model of DotNetNuke allows for quick and easy editing of content, whereas Joomla requires you to sign into a separate area of the site before making changes. DNN’s use of the drag and drop paradigm when modifying the position of modules is especially useful compared to Joomla’s more clunky back-end system. Beyond that the two frameworks share similar ease of use features with mass uploading, built in macro languages and search engine friendly URLs available by default.

In a comparison between Joomla and DotNetNuke, several things become evident. DNN arguably has an advantage in core functionality, however is lacking some of the third party extensions which make Joomla so appealing. Joomla’s style of administration is not as elegant as DotNetNuke’s in-line editing, and generally the framework is not as flexible. However it can be very quick to get a site based on a generic layout up and running. As such Joomla is likely ideal for making quick, inexpensive and moderately interactive websites.

DotNetNuke is aimed more at the creation of business scale web sites and web applications. Tight integration with existing systems and a usable e-commerce solution out of the box make it a winning formula for companies who want to set up an initial online sales presence. At the same time the stable, professionally certified and supported version is ideal for use in business critical applications, as well as high traffic community hubs.

DNN Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Building Websites with DotNetNuke

clock June 9, 2010 09:10 by author Jervis

As an open-source Web portal, DotNetNuke is a highly efficient content management system best suited for building commercial Web sites, corporate intranets and extranets, and online publishing portals. Being an open-source software with a BSD licensing agreement plan, DotNetNuke is free of cost and can be used for any commercial or non-commercial application. Just giving credit to the DotNetNuke community can suffice the requirement for extensive use of this user-friendly software. Built on a robust Microsoft ASP.NET (VB.NET) platform, DotNetNuke is easily installed and hosted. By downloading and installing the software, you have all of the features and tools required to create and manage your Internet or Intranet site, including its layout, content, security, email client, search engine submission and membership plans. Virtually no programming skills are necessary. ASPHostPortal is a premiere web hosting provider that supports the reliable and low cost DNN hosting plan. Only with $ 5.00/month, you can get DNN hosting. Amazing…So, don’t think too long.

The most important advantage with DotNetNuke in Web hosting is that the user is the site administrator.  Using a highly advanced browser-based Web management system, you have the convenience of managing your site with little or no training. This saves time and money, and adds speed and efficiency to your operations as the intermediary developers are eliminated. Content creation and configuration aspects do not require any additional support services, meaning greater and speedier returns on your merchandize investments. As the software has a modular design, you have the opportunities to market niche products like site templates, premium content management modules and multiple database options to your DotNetNuke clients. As DotNetNuke separates site content from site design, the possibilities for marketing highly tailor-made templates to your clients increase considerably.

DotNetNuke is based on Microsoft technology and includes the .NET framework, meaning you can conveniently work on your existing infrastructure such as Windows Servers, database servers and development tools. The software is also very flexible and integrates well with your built-up systems and automated environments, and requires minimum interventions. Consequently, you have more time to focus on your sales instead of support aspects. With regular updates and introductions of new features, it continues to create value for your Web hosting business in a sustainable manner.

DotNetNuke is fully extensible and scaleable - it can be used to create a Web site of any capacity, from a small writers Web portal to a highly customized corporate Web site. Sites can even be augmented through third-party private assembly tools. DotNetNuke can support multiple portals off one install and the administrators have the advantage of managing any number of sites from this hosting account. DotNetNuke facilitates division of administrative options between the host level and the individual portal level, so there is complete independence and flexibility. It has fully customizable modules that allow a wide variety of changes at all levels. You can conveniently make changes in basic elements like font, type, color and bullet points, overall site appearance, and apply new skins and module containers to the site without affecting the content. DotNetNuke has very high security features on validation, encryptions, tracking ‘bugs’ and mitigating other potential threats. The multi-language localization feature available on DotNetNuke now makes it possible to roll out Web sites that are completely non-English and administrators worldwide would have no difficulty in handling the features.

The DotNetNuke community is growing. Currently there are more than 350,000 registered users and a fast expanding network of third-party developers, hosters and resellers. With a backbone of core programmers and the ever-growing community of users to help to troubleshoot any potential problems, DotNetNuke is never far away. Microsoft supports the DotNetNuke community, hosting the discussions forum on ASP.NET Web site. Shaun Walker of DotNetNuke acknowledged this by stating, “The community would not have grown to what it is today without the support of Microsoft…. There’s a lot of trust based on the fact that we have a solid working relationship with Microsoft.” This close relationship has helped DotNetNuke to take advantages of many cutting-edge features of MS Visual Studio.NET and ASP.NET, and ultimately makes the software even more flexible and user friendly.

DNN Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Best Practices for Migrating Your Website or Web Site Content over to DotNetNuke

clock June 2, 2010 05:26 by author Jervis

With DotNetNuke you can quickly build and edit a website using only your web browser. DotNetNuke websites are made up of Pages and Modules.

Pages provide a place for you to display your site content. These Pages are made up of one or more Modules. Modules define the functionality that can be added to a page. DotNetNuke has many built-in modules including, Text, Table, Events, Links, Picture and more. In addition, many more modules are available from the community including Web Forums, Blogs etc.

Building a new Website with DotNetNuke involves the following steps:

- Install DotNetNuke on your computer.
- Sign up with a Web Hoster who provides DotNetNuke hosting accounts. This Web Hoster will set up a blank DotNetNuke website for you.
- The Web Hoster gives you login information. Log in to your DotNetNuke site using this information.
- Using DotNetNuke, add pages, modules and select skin for your website.

Suppose you have an existing website and you want to use the database provided with the existing website.

Suppose in an existing website you have a MSSQL database that contains data to be displayed. If you've got a legacy database that contains hundreds of tables, procedures, views, etc. it may not be practical to move everything into your DNN database or build the DNN database within the legacy database. Here one can define the database connection string via a reference in Web.Config. This database will co-exist with the DotNetNuke database and be accessed by the DotNetNuke site.  The content can be used by DNN site via following steps:

1. In Web.config Within

2. Within add key for mydata's connection string - similar to SiteSqlServer - but pointing to appropriate server/database.

3. Within Added

type = "myStuff.myProject.Data.SqlDataProvider, myStuff.myProject.SqlDataProvider"
connectionStringName = "mydataserver"
providerPath = " -- appropriate path --
objectQualifier = ""
databaseOwner = "dbo"
upgradeConnectionString = ""
/>

4. Set the Assembly Name for the MyProject to myStuff.myProject. A dll should exist in \bin directory where dotnetnuke.dll exist called myStuff.myProject.dll

5. Set the Assembly Name for the SQLDataProvider to myStuff.myProject.Data.SQLDataProvider. A dll should exist in \bin directory where dotnetnuke.dll exist called myStuff.myProject.Data.SQLDataProvider.dll

6. Set the Namespace for DataProvider to myStuff.myProject.Data.

7. In my DataProvider.vb class that must inherit DataProvider, change the CreateProvider sub to

objProvider = Ctype(Framework.Reflection.CreateObject("mydata", "myStuff.myProject.Data", "myStuff.myProject.Data"), DataProvider)

8. In my SQLDataProvider.vb class that inherits DataProvider, set the ProviderType = "mydata"

You might want to add an additional descriptor to the convention here so that myStuff.myProject becomes myStuff.myProject.myModule, but that is personal choice.
Generally, with the existing websites or systems, one wants to switch over to DNN as a base for providing the portal-functionality that we need in many areas of the application. Most of the sites going for DNN are workflow application but large parts of the site are content heavy and should be updated by certain groups of users with specific security roles. A lot of VBscript code that does page HTML rendering, so is a first pass at "hosting" DNN within the existing ASP application. Eventually all HTML logic is to be replaced with .NET code, but here comes the point as to where we can host DNN and some off-the-shelf modules and make the site running, follow the following steps:

1. In the ASP application: create a .asp page which creates a javascript with three variables: htmlMenuAndTopLeft, and htmlMain, and htmlStyleAndScript. These variables are loaded up with the HTML content needed to render the client interface.

2. Create a DNN skin that references the .asp page from the legacy application.

3. The DNN skin uses client-side document.write(htmlMenuAndTopLeft) .. etc to place the HTML "wrapper" around the DNN contentpanes. This way, all the links, CSS, and images etc point to the proper location. The content area of DNN is generated from 100% .net code.

However, if you have to install DNN tables/stored procedures into an existing database an object qualifier of DNN is a good option. Here other features like role-base security for selective display of content and functionality can be used.

A designer shouldn’t be in charge of migration of an existing site to DNN site. The work should be assigned  to the developer who might be able to write scripts or code to perhaps assist in importing of data. Regardless of how much you try to automate, its' really an initial hands on job of copy and pasting of information to a certain extent. The key area to look for is when copying and pasting data, to make sure it's nicely pasted without taking the other formatting into the page. This is only about the content but the original look and feel is not intact here.

If you want the original look and feel of the site and the work ids assigned to a designer, the knowledge of DNN architecture, concepts of skinning, or experience in CSS or html is a must. Get a dev environment setup , copy the content and add the pages. Initially you can provide the layout using the default skinning scheme but once the site is up more and more intricate schema can be build to let the site preserve original look and feel.

Suppose you are working on a site and want to transfer data to DotNetNuke This data conversion is possible by exporting your existing data in tabular format and then use that data to import into DNN.  This typical procedure requires mapping of all your existing data to the required formats.  Depending upon how much data you have, it may be more efficient to go through the process of recreating some pages in DNN and then import certain other data that make sense. For example consider a specific situation of moving data from phpNuke to DotNetNuke. The core PHP-Nuke modules are somewhat similar to the DNN modules. One can initially find the modules that correspond to each other in basic functionality:

1. The PHP-Nuke Content Module is similar to DNN Core Text/HTML Module.
2. The PHP-Nuke News Module is similar to DNN Core Announcements Module.
3. The PHP-Nuke Gallery Module is similar to DNN non-core DNNGallery Module.
4. The PHP-Nuke Downloads Module is similar to DNN Core Documents Module and non-core DNNDownloads Module.
5. The PHP-Nuke GBook Module is similar to DNN non-core Bring2Mind Guestbook Module.
6. The PHP-Nuke Feedback Module is similar to DNN non-core Feedback Module.

At time when you are moving to DNN from existing website, there might be certain complicated web pages or web forms which you don’t want to alter for example those with intricate calculations or analysis forms or certain other forms where particular formatting is a requirement. Here you find out ways so a static web form can be used in DNN.

If multiple instances of these pages don’t hamper your basic design, a simple way out it to make each of these programs as modules and then insert them in to DNN portal. Modules are the best suited for web items that are intended to be used at multiple instances in your web site and have a need to communicate with databases to store/take the data from a particular instance. Here you must check with the data Pages with these Modules are caching during page loading. If data is large then you might need to throw some of that information within the page onto the database to avoid slowing. But there is a drawback as the design incorporated through making these web pages Modules may slow down your site making it less efficient. But there are certain pages, web forms/programs etc which do not need to communicate with databases. They just take the data that user provided do the engineering calculations etc, get the results and post it back to the user. Moreover since these web forms are unique, multiple instances of these programs may not be needed.  The way out here is to use the Links module (standard) and link to the pages in a new window. Or, to give website a consistent look use the I-Frame module and nest the page as an I-frame within DNN.

DotNetNuke Hosting with ASPHostPortal :: DotNetNuke 5.0 and jQuery

clock May 31, 2010 06:35 by author Jervis

This article talk about the host level settings and how the work, then we will discuss the developer implementation of jQuery. If you looking for DNN hosting, you can always consider ASPHostPortal. At ASPHostPortal you can get a professional DNN installation with your DNN Hosting account. You can always start from our Portal ONE hosting plan (from @$5.00/month) to get this application installed on your website. So, why wait longer?

Host Settings

To provide jQuery support in DotNetNuke a new set of options was added to the “host settings” section of the installation.

jQuery Settings:
- Installed jQuery Version
- Use jQuery Debug Version
- Use Hosted jQuery Version
- Hosted jQuery URL

As you can se here these are very simple options.  The first is for informational purposes only and identifies the currently installed version of jQuery that is LOCAL to the DotNetNuke installation.  By default the minified version of jQuery is used to help with performance, however when debugging script the minified version can make the task quite difficult.  This is where the “Use jQuery Debug Version” comes in handy, especially for those with local development installations.

The last two options provide DotNetNuke site administrators another great option, the ability to use a remotely hosted version of jQuery rather than the local one.  By default this is disabled, but the key advantage here is that as adoption of jQuery grows if more sites use the hosted version individuals will already have jQuery cached and it will not have to be requested on page load when visiting your specific site.  The final option allows the site administrator to select the URL for the hosted service, granting full flexibility in implementation.

As a host user goes, this is all that is needed to configure jQuery, then it is time for the developer to get involved.

Using jQuery as a Developer

Developers will also love this implementation as with a single line of code they can ensure that the needed reference to jQuery is added and they can also be assured that only one reference exists.  To perform this action the following line of code is all that is needed.

DotNetNuke.Framework.jQuery.RequestRegistration()

This will register the jQuery script for the page, the key to remember here is that this value must be set on EVERY page load as the framework does not keep track of which modules need jQuery and which do not.  This is typically the most common stumbling block when working with jQuery.

Otherwise this completes the implementation and you can include jQuery script information in your module’s .js files.  However, there is one important compatibility item to consider when it comes to jQuery, DotNetNuke, and Microsoft’s ASP.NET AJAX.  And that is the use of the $() shortcut, it is strongly recommended that rather than using the $() syntax that you use jquery() to ensure the highest level of compatibility with the framework, other modules, and other javascript that exists on the page.

Example Implementation

So now this begs to answer the  most important question, what should we use jQuery for?  Well this is a question that isn’t easily answered by just saying everything.  But the key is that anything you are looking to do client side, MIGHT have some benefit of using jQuery rather than standard JavaScript.  This is due to the jQuery effects and the extra bonus items that it offers when it comes to working with content.  For example IowaComputerGurus Inc offers an Expandable Text/HTML module for DotNetNuke that just recently released support for jQuery for the expanding and collapsing actions.  jQuery provided a much more user friendly expansion and collapsing process with a “slow” show and hide process.

The code they use to show and hide elements is shown below.

function ShowOrHideContentJquery(idOfElement, itemId)
{
    //Create paths
    expand = jQuery("#ICG_ETH_EXPAND_" + itemId);
    collapse = jQuery("#ICG_ETH_COLLAPSE_" + itemId);

    //do the magic
    listing = jQuery("#" + idOfElement);
    if (listing.hasClass('hideContent')) {
        //Currently hidden, show with jquery
        listing.show('slow').removeClass('hideContent');

         //Setup expand collapse
         if (expand != null) {
          expand.addClass('hideContent');
          collapse.removeClass('hideContent');
        }
 }
    else {
        //Show
        listing.hide('slow').addClass('hideContent');

         //Setup expand collapse
        if (expand != null) {
           expand.removeClass('hideContent');
           collapse.addClass('hideContent');
        }
    }
}

It is very simple code, but uses some fun jQuery items such as; removeClass, addClass, show, and hide.  These options are all quick and easy ways to manipulate the HTML Document Object Model to get intended effects with little programming on the developers side of things.  This is just one simple example of jQuery in action within DotNetNuke.

At ASPHostPortal you can get a professional DNN installation with your DNN Hosting account. You can always start from our Portal ONE hosting plan (from @$5.00/month) to get this application installed on your website. So, why wait longer? In this article, we want to introduce DNN Web Application.

A Web Application Framework is a robust software library used as the basis for building advanced Web applications. A Web Application Framework typically contains a well-defined architecture and an abstract set of reusable components that are specifically designed to simplify development, enforce consistency, increase productivity, and improve application quality. Typical features include modular architecture, membership management, security and role management, site organization and navigation, error and event logging, data access and caching, search and syndication, and extensibility at every level. Frameworks are used in corporations, public sector, private sector, small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and even individual Web sites.

Although the concept has always been relevant, Web Application Frameworks have just come back into favor in recent years. This is likely a result of the ever-pervasive basic business philosophy emphasizing a reduction in the Total Cost of Ownership and increase in the Return On Investment. Web Application Frameworks can provide big wins in both of these categories because they allow developers to focus on the high-level business processes while leveraging a rock-solid application foundation.

DotNetNuke is a Web Application Framework that provides a highly extensible development environment, based on published standards and proven design patterns. Since Web Application Frameworks are generic by nature, they can be used as the underpinnings for any number of powerful Web applications. From Community Portals to high volume E-Commerce shopping malls, from Content Management Systems (CMS) to Customer Relationship Management Systems (CRM), the DotNetNuke Web Application Framework provides the fundamental services to build highly functional and scalable Web applications. To back up this claim, the DotNetNuke Web Application Framework is distributed as part of a fully functional CMS - the DotNetNuke Enterprise Portal.

Introducing DotNetNuke
Necessity is the mother of invention. In classic open source fashion, we originally created the application because we were interested in a way to provide functional Web sites to amateur sports organizations and could not find a suitable proprietary alternative. After investing significant effort only to discover that my business goals were not going to be realized, we decided to release the application as an open source community project. Version 1.0 of DotNetNuke was released December 24, 2002 (Christmas Eve). Since then, DotNetNuke has evolved at an exponential rate, recently surpassing 200,000 registered users, 800,000 downloads, and maintaining a consistent weekly project activity rank of #15 on SourceForge.Net.

A single DotNetNuke installation can host an unlimited number of portal Web sites, each with its own distinct URL. Each Web site is managed by one or more administrators. Portals can contain a variety of content, including announcements, events, discussion forums, links, images, surveys, galleries, directories, shopping carts, and many other features, all comparable to those available in proprietary content management systems.

DotNetNuke is developed on the powerful Microsoft .NET platform - Windows server, IIS, SQL Server 2000, and ASP.NET (VB and C#). Part of DotNetNuke's attraction is it can run on almost any database server, as long as someone has created the necessary provider (third-party providers include Oracle and mySQL). The flexible technical requirements make it possible to install and evaluate DotNetNuke on almost any computer. Its primary deployment scenario is to shared Web servers managed by Web hosting providers. However, it can also be deployed to dedicated Web servers and Intranets, where the administrator has much more control of the environment.

DotNetNuke is offered under a nonrestrictive BSD License, a standard open source license that allows for full usage in both commercial and noncommercial environments. The BSD, well-documented ASP.NET source code, an active developer community, and a modular architecture make it possible to customize DotNetNuke and leverage it as a mature Web Application Framework. For end users, all DotNetNuke requires is a Web browser and an Internet connection.

DotNetNuke provides the ability to manage content at a granular level. Essentially this means that a virtual page in DotNetNuke is simply a generic container that contains various content regions. Management of each type of content region is exposed through mini-applications referred to as Modules. Modules provide expert features for the display, configuration, and administration of specific types of content. For example, there are simple modules such as the Text/HTML module, which are designed to manage the display and administration of basic content information. There are also powerful modules such as the Forums module, which is designed to manage a full-featured community discussion forum. A page can contain an unlimited number of content modules, and a content module can be exposed on an unlimited number of Web site pages. This model is superior to other Web Application Frameworks that limit you to hard-linking content information directly to a single site page or that only allow a single type of content to be managed on a page.

The DotNetNuke name comes from a long history of open source content management systems that have adopted "nuke" as part of their project identity (the original credit belongs to Francisco Burzi, the creator of PHP-Nuke).

Installation and Configuration
Installing DotNetNuke on a Microsoft Windows Server system (2000 or 2003) is straightforward and well documented. After unpacking the downloaded ZIP package, place all files and folders into your Web server's root directory. Create an SQL Server 2000 database and user account. DotNetNuke stores some files, such as user-uploaded images, in a special home directory for each portal. This directory should have write access enabled or else you are not going to be able to take advantage of all of the application features.

The default IIS settings on most Web servers should be adequate. DotNetNuke does not require session support, nor does it require custom mappings for specific file types or error codes. By default, the DotNetNuke application runs in a medium-trust Code Access Security configuration, which provides some critical security safeguards, especially for Web hosting providers.

A single file, web.config, stores the basic configuration settings, such as the database connection information, encryption keys, and provider configuration. Make a copy of the release.config file provided by DotNetNuke, name it web.config, and edit it using your favorite text editor. This thoughtful arrangement is especially useful when you upgrade DotNetNuke. DotNetNuke's release.config is upgraded, but your original web.config, which contains settings specific to your installation, is left untouched. The only value that typically needs to be modified on a new installation is the SiteSqlServer connection string in the AppSettings node. On an upgrade, it is also critical that you preserve your localized MachineValidationKey and MachineDecryptionKey values.

Why DotNetNuke?
DotNetNuke offers tangible benefits for a number of diverse stakeholder groups.

Creating and maintaining a Web application can be a complex task. DotNetNuke does an exceptional job of hiding this complexity. Its detailed on-line help, open source samples, and sensible defaults assist developers and administrators in installing, administrating, and using the Web Application Framework. Extensibility pervades all aspects of the core architecture, providing nearly unlimited opportunities to extend the base application.

Perhaps the greatest strength of DotNetNuke is the community that has grown around the project. Both developers and users participate in DotNetNuke's active discussion forums, where they share tips, announce new developments, help new users, share resources, and debate new ideas. DotNetNuke's low barrier on entry, flexibility, and ease of use helps bring powerful Web application technology within the reach of those with limited technical and financial resources. DotNetNuke is an excellent example of how and why the open source model works.
