Reporting Service (SSRS) 2008 Hosting :: SSRS Report Execution and Performance Enhancements

clock July 22, 2013 06:17 by author Mike

Reporting Service (SSRS) 2008 R2 allows us to execute reports in 3 modes:

  1. On Demand
  2. From Cache
  3. From Snapshots

On Demand

  • This is normal approach that we follow, by hitting a report server URL. Each time a report is run, data is returned from the database server and rendered to the report.
  • This approach ensures that our report is update and fresh.
  • The downside of this approach is that, if n users open up this report on their browsers, queries on the report are executed n times.
  • Thus this approach at times might slow down the server.

Cache

  • One of the performance enhancements techniques is to cache a report when it is initially run.
  • This means that if another user requests for the report, the same report is served to the user from the cache.
  • This avoids people querying the database server from each report rendering.
  • To make sure that people do not receive too much stale data, we can set a time to invalidate a cache.
  • This is a good performance enhancement technique for slow running reports.

Snapshots

  • Report snapshots are created at a particular schedule for certain parameters.
  • Please note that parameters cannot be changes on snapshot reports.
  • SSRS 2008 R2 allows to schedule the snapshot creation times.
  • Users can directly render a report from a snapshot. However please note that not all reports can have snapshots, especially the ones that prompt users for credentials.

SSRS 2008 R2 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: How to fix Reporting Services permissions are insufficient for performing operation (rsAccessDenied)

clock March 1, 2012 06:00 by author Jervis

If you are getting the following error while trying to access or deploy a SQL Services Reporting Services (ssrs) report server on your localhost:

The permissions granted to user 'domain\username' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)

Here's what to do:

1. Make sure you have access configured to the URL
http://localhost/reports using the SQL Reporting Services Configuration. To do this:

- Open Reporting Services Configuration Manager -> then connect to the report server instance -> then click on Report Manager URL.

- In the Report Manager URL page, click the Advanced button -> then in the Multiple Identities for Report Manager, click Add.
- In the Add a Report Manager HTTP URL popup box, select Host Header and type in: localhostClick OK to save your changes.

2. Now start/ run Internet Explorer using Run as Administator...

NOTE: If you don't see the 'Site Settings' link in the top left corner while at
http://localhost/reports it is probably because you aren't running IE as an Administator or you haven't assigned your computers 'domain\username' to the reporting services roles, see how to do this in the next few steps.

3. Then go to: http://localhost/reports (you may have to login with your Computer's username and password)

4. You should now be directed to the Home page of SQL Server Reporting Services here:
http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx

5. From the Home page, click the Properties tab, then click New Role Assignment

6. In the Group or user name textbox, add the 'domain\username' which was in the error message (in my case, I added: JERVIS-PC\JERVIS for the 'domain\username', in your case you can find the domain\username for your computer in the rsAccessDenied error message).

7. Now check all the checkboxes; Browser, Content Manager, My Reports, Publisher, Report Builder, and then click OK.

8. You're domain\username should now be assigned to the Roles that will give you access to deploy your reports to the Report Server. If you're using Visual Studio or SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio to deploy your reports to your local reports server, you should now be able to.

Try it and let me know if you have any problem. SSRS 2008 R2 hosting with only $2.00/month. CLICK HERE.

Reporting Services 2008 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: How to Create Report Using Reporting Services

clock October 6, 2011 06:33 by author Jervis

Today, I will show you how to create a report using reporting services and dataset as the data source. It’s simple tutorial and if you’re beginner in Reporting Services, it will help you.

1. Right click to add a new item to your project. On the Reporting tab, choose “Report Wizard” and enter the name of your report in the “name” field provided at the bottom of the “add new item” dialog box. Click on the “Add’ button to proceed.

2. In this stage , you choose the data source of your report. You start by entering the name of your Dataset. Take note of the name you enter as you will use it in your code. Select the data source ( the dataset of your project) and then select the table you want to display in your report. Click next to go to the next stage.

3. Here, you choose the fields to display on your reports and how to group your records, either by rows or columns. Drag the fields you want to display in the “Values” area. In case you want group your records by rows or columns, drag that field to the “row groups” or “column groups “ respectively. Functions like sum,average, etc can be applied to  fields in the “values’ area. Click next to go the next tab

4. In this stage you choose the layout of your report. Select your layout and click on the next button.

5. Select your report style and click on the finish button.

Your report is then displayed with the selected fields. You can then drag the table to a position of your choice on the report form. You can also insert text and image onto your report as it is done in crystal report.

After creating the reports you then have to integrate it into your forms. First you need to add a report viewer. You do this by creating a new form and dragging the report viewer onto it as shown below.

After this, you write some small codes to view your report.  First you have to make sure the data table is filled programmatically. Let say at form load event we want to display the report. We start by declaring a procedure that can that accepts the dataset name, report name and the datasource.

   1: public void fillReport(String dataset, String reportname, DataTable loadData)
   2:        {
   3:            this.reportViewer1.ProcessingMode = ProcessingMode.Local;
   4:            //choosing the report source
   5:            this.reportViewer1.LocalReport.ReportPath = Application.StartupPath + "/" + reportname + ".rdlc";
   6:            //add the datasource to the report
   7:            this.reportViewer1.LocalReport.DataSources.Add(new ReportDataSource(dataset, loadData));
   8:            this.reportViewer1.RefreshReport();
   9:
  10:        }

so on form load we fill the data table and call the method above to fill the show the report.

“fillReport("DataSet1", "purchaseSearch", this.dataSet1.land”

Note that the dataset name should be the same as shown in the created report.

Hope it will help you.

SSRS 2008 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Creating PDF File from ASP.NET Application from a in-memory dataset

clock July 27, 2011 07:31 by author Jervis

First, lets create an ASP.Net application using the new Project creation wizard.

Add a new project item and chose Report(report1.rdlc)

What we need now is a dataset, which we can use in reports. To do this, lets add a new item – dataset.

Lets name it as MyDataset.XSD. Lets open this dataset and add a table using the toolbox. Lets name it as DataTable1 and lets add two columns here Email and User. Lets compile this once so that we generate the dataset model.

Next step is to use this in our reports. Lets open the report designer(double click the RDLC added earlier) and add a DataSet to this. On report data panel, say New->Data Set.

Now select the Mydataset as the data source and the default table as dataset. Now we have Email and User as columns. Lets leave the name as DataSet1. Now its ready to be used in the report.

If everything goes right, you can add a tablix and associate the DataSet1 with it. Now you should see the fields available for using in reports.

I have mapped user and Email fields in the report.

Now lets focus back to our code. Open the markup and drop a report viewer control. This should look something like this.

    <rsweb:ReportViewer ID="repViewer" runat="server">
    </rsweb:ReportViewer>

Lets prepare the data to fill the report data using the C# code. We can do this in two ways.

1. Use the same dataset (MyDataSet)
2. Create the new dataset on the fly.

Lets try the second approach. On the code behind, lets create a data set and add a table to it and add some data

            DataSet ds = new DataSet();
            DataTable dt = new DataTable();

            dt.Columns.Add("User");
            dt.Columns.Add("Email");

            dt.Rows.Add("Guru", "[email protected]");
            dt.Rows.Add("Guru", "[email protected]");
            dt.Rows.Add("Guru", "[email protected]");
            dt.Rows.Add("Guru", "[email protected]");
            ds.Tables.Add(dt);

Now, lets bind this to the report

repViewer.Reset(); // follow the same order, reset and then add the data   repViewer.LocalReport.ReportPath = "Report1.rdlc";

reportDataSource rs = new ReportDataSource();
rs.Name = "DataSet1"; // Important: Use the same name as given in the report.
rs.Value = ds.Tables[0];

repViewer.LocalReport.DataSources.Add(rs);

Finally, rendering part. Lets return the response as a PDF file

string mimeType;
string encoding;
string extension;
Warning[] warnings;
string[] streamids;

byte[] reportBytes = repViewer.LocalReport.Render("PDF", null,
 out mimeType, out encoding,
 out extension, out streamids,
 out  warnings);

Response.ClearContent(); Response.ClearHeaders();
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "inline; filename=Test.pdf");
/ Response.AddHeader("Accept-Header", reportBytes.Length.ToString());
Response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
Response.OutputStream.Write(reportBytes, 0, reportBytes.Length);
Response.Flush();
Response.Close();

Only advantage of creating the dataset using XSD(MyDataSet) is that you can use them in the report directly by selecting the element. This will help you a lot while binding. You can also connect to SQL and build your data set and use it for report design. Later you can build your own dataset like we have done and use it by providing the same name.Following SQL statement will do the job for you.

Select 'Guru' as User, select 'Test' as Email

Screen shot below is the output, Pdf displayed in browser embedded. This approach will be a great help if you have specify requirement for printing involving the layout, breaks and header/footer.

SSRS 2008 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Using Report Parameters in SQL Server Reporting Services

clock April 13, 2011 07:41 by author Jervis

Introduction

When you are using reports, you need to have parameters that narrow down your report for better analysis. You will often see that you need to have more than one parameter, where the second parameter may depend on the first parameter, which many require you to refresh the second parameter depending on the first parameter.

In addition, you may have to have parameters with multiple and/or default values. This article addresses how to create parameters in SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (SSRS).

Pre-Requests

To understand the article content, you should have a fair knowledge of creating a report in SSRS, as this article does review how to create a report in SSRS in detail. However, I will try to cover as much as possible when it comes to creation of SSRS report. Also, you will need to know how to write basic T-SQL queries joining two or more tables.

Resource wise, you need to have SQL Server 2005 installed with SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. As I am going to use data in the AdventureWorks sample database, it will be easier if you have installed an AdventureWorks database with your version of SQL Server.

Sample Case

Since it is always helpful to the reader to explain things through example, let us assume we want to list out employees depending on their country, state/province and city. Users should have an option of selecting a country. Depending on the selection of country, we need to list state/provinces which belong to the selected country. After selecting a state, we should list all the related cities and the user should have the option of selecting one or more cities from the list. Depending on the selected city or cities, the user should get a final list of employees that fit the criteria.

Implementation

First, you must create a Report Server Project from SQL Server Business Intelligence, then add a report to the project. Next is to create a shared data source that is pointed to the AdventureWorks database. We now need to add a dataset for country. You can add this dataset from the dataset tab by selecting ‘<New Dataset> Option’ from the dataset list box. Then configure the dsCountry dataset as depicted in the below image.

The next task is to assign this dsCountry to a report parameter. Select the ‘Report Parameters’ option from the Report menu.

Below is an image of the screen you should see.

The options in the dialog box above are:

Name – Name of the parameter. When you select a value, that value is stored in this parameter. As this is a variable name, you cannot have special characters (*, ! or spaces, etc.) in this field.

Data Type – Data type of the parameter. Options of this field include: Boolean, Datetime, Integer, Float and String. In this case, we will chose ‘String’ for the country parameter.

Prompt – Prompt is what you see in the report. As this is a label, you can have any characters for the prompt.

The following attributes are as simple as their names indicate. The difference between Hidden and Internal is that hidden variable can be changed from mechanisms and internal variables cannot be changed.

The next step is to assign values for the parameters.

The non-queried option should be used when a parameter has fixed values, such as Yes/No, Male/Female etc. From query option is to fill values from a dataset to parameter. In this example, the dataset is dscountry and we need to fill in two values: value field and label field. The label field is what users will see and the value field is what will be stored in the parameter. In this case, Name is the label field while CountryRegionCode is the value field. For example, if the user selects the United Status, US will be stored in the Country parameter.

The next step is to assign default values. A default value makes it easier for users to work with reports because it makes the most probable value the user will chose the default value. For example, in this report users be selecting United States, so having United States being the default value makes it easier for the user to fill out the form.

SSRS 2008 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Exploring SSRS 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0

clock March 28, 2011 06:50 by author Jervis

There is a good preliminary documentation on building Report Parts in MSDN:
Publishing Report Parts in Report Builder 3.0 – http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee633670%28v=SQL.105%29.aspx.

Creating the Report

Download document/screenshots: Exploring SSRS 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0 – Report Parts

For this mini tutorial I am going to assume you have created your report in BIDS 2008

1. Deploy your report to the report server.

2. Go to that report. Hover over the report name, and click on the down arrow to reveal the contextual dropdown. Select Edit in Report Builder.

3. Once Report Builder opens, go to the Report Builder main button (I think it looks like a scroll), and select Publish Report Parts.

4. In the Publish Report Parts window, select Review and modify report parts before publishing (unless you really want to publish all report parts with default settings).

5. In the next window, select which Report Parts you want to publish. Put a description too, makes it easier for your Report Builder users to identify report parts later on.

6. When you’re done, click on Publish. Note there is no dialog box notifying you that publishing is done. All you get are the green checkmarks beside the report parts you selected, and the message at the bottom of the Publish Report Parts dialog box saying how many report parts were published, and how manyfailded.

7. If this is the first time you published a Report Part, a new Report Part folder will be created in your report server.

8. Inside the Report Part folder are your published report parts. Note that the icon of the report parts give it away – puzzle pieces! Also note that when you hover over a report part and click on the down arrow, you will reveal the contextual menu for a report part (move, delete, security, manage and download).

That’s it. Great job.

Report Part Gallery

Inside the Report Builder 3.0, you will also see the Report Part Gallery tab, which will list all available Report Parts you can add to your report.

Report Part Updates

It is also important to note that if any report parts get updated, the reports that use that report part will display a notice when opened in Report Builder. It will tell you that the published report part(s) have been updated on the server.

Once you choose to view changes, you can select which report parts you want to update.

And once it’s updated, no in-your-face notice again that the update was successful. It’s still just that subtle green checkmark beside the report part you chose to update.

SSRS 2008 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: How to Change Reporting Services Timeout in SharePoint

clock January 10, 2011 06:36 by author Jervis

Recently someone asked me to check a Reporting Services report that always resulted in an Unexpected Error. The report server was configured for Sharepoint Integrated Mode

You need to notice Execution timeout of SharePoint. You can change this timeout setting in the web.config of your Sharepoint site, by default in
c\:inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80.

In this web.config you will find an XML node called “httpRuntime”. In this node you have to add an extra tag: executionTimeout=”9000:

<httpRuntime maxRequestLength=”51200″ executionTimeout=”9000″ />

Save and close the file and do an IISReset. When you run the report again, you won’t get this error anymore.

I also checked the web.config of the Report Manager, but in Native Mode this seems to be the default:

Good luck

SSRS 2008 R2 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Installing SSRS 2008 R2 on SharePoint 2010

clock January 5, 2011 09:20 by author Jervis

What do you need first? Please download SQL Server® 2008 R2 November CTP Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint® Technologies 2010 and please follow this steps:

1. Install a SharePoint technology instance. (Already did this when installing PowerPivot with SharePoint)

2. Install SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP Reporting Services and specify that the report server use SharePoint Integrated mode

3. Configure Reporting Services

4. Download the Reporting Services Add-in by clicking the rsSharePoint.msi link later on this page. To start the installation immediately, click Run

After installing Reporting services and the add-in your reporting server is ready to be integrated with SharePoint, in SharePoint 2010 we have some new admin screens.

To integrate go to central admin, general application settings:

When you successfully installed the add-in a reporting services icon will be there. Click Reporting Services Integration:

Add the report server web service url (To get the URL, open the Reporting Services Configuration tool, connect to the report server, and click Web Service URL. Click the URL to verify it works. Copy the URL and paste it into Report Server Web Service URL.), select your authentication mode (windows authentication is prefered). Add a username and password of your admin account. Click ok to configure and start the integration.

After the installation you can set the reporting services default.

What is changed in SP2010 is that there isn’t a report library available. You have to add content types to a default library. So go to a site collection, site actions,  View all site content.

Create a Asset library:

Now we have to make sure we can add reports to the library. To do this we have to add content types:

Open the library, click on library tools, library settings, Under Content Types, click Add from existing site content types. In the Select Content Types section, in Select site content types from, click the arrow to select Reporting Services. In the Available Site Content Types list, click Report Builder, Report Data Source and Report and then click Add to move the selected content type to the Content types to add list.

Now we are ready to upload reports and execute them from within our webparts:

SSRS 2008 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: First Report in SSRS 2008

clock January 4, 2011 07:49 by author Jervis

In this article, I will explain how to create a simple report (that could be first report for a newbie) using SSRS 2008. Here I am assuming that you have successfully installed SQL Server 2008 along with SSRS.

There are two ways to create Reports in SSRS. You can develop the report manually, or you can use the Report Wizard to give yourself a head start. For this first report, I am going to take advantage of the wizard.

STEP 1:

To begin, start a new Business Intelligence project in Visual Studio 2008 by clicking on Start --> All Programs --> SQL Server 2008 --> SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. Then, from the menu, select File --> New --> Project to open New Project wizard. Now select Report Server Project from Visual studio installed templates and specify Name, Location and Solution Name. I am specifying these ReportProjectSSRS, D:\Hari, and ReportProjectSSRS respectively as shown below:

STEP 2:

In Solution Explorer, right click on Reports folder and select Add New Report. This will open Report Wizard. Click Next on the Welcome screen and this will bring you to the Select the Data Source screen.

STEP 3:

Enter the name of Data Source as dsLocal and select type as Microsoft SQL Server. Now click on Edit button to set the connecting string for data source, this will open Connection Properties window. Enter Server name and database name and click on Test Connection buttion to make sure the connection is established. Click OK button twice to close Test Results and Conection Properties windows.

You can check the Make this a shared data source checkbox to make this data source as shared so that it can be used for other reports as well. Now click on Next to proceed.

STEP 4:

This will open Design the Query wizard. Here you can define your Query string. Alternatively you can use Query Builder... to build your query. I will use below query to pull data from Employee table:

SELECT
   [Emp_code],[Emp_Name],[Desg],

   [Head],[DOB],[Basic],[Dept_Code]
FROM Employee (NOLOCK)

Click Next to proceed. It will display Select the Report Type wizard. Select Tabular option and click Next to proceed.

STEP 5:

Now you can see Design the Table wizard. Select required fields from Available fields and clicked on details button to make these fields available in details part of a report. You can do data grouping as well using Group button. Click Next to proceed.

STEP 6:

Now you can see Choose the Table Style wizard. Select default style Slate and click Next. Finally you can see Completing the Wizard. Enter report name FirstReport and click Finish to complete the wizard.

Thats all. We are done with our First report in SSRS 2008. Report at design time will look like one shown below:

Click on Preview to generate the report:

SSRS 2008 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: How to Use a Local Reporting Services 2008 Report with an ADO.NET Data Set

clock December 14, 2010 04:48 by author Jervis

SQL Server Reporting Services is an incredibly full featured reporting tool. An often asked question though is “How can I use Reporting Services without setting up a full SQL Server just to run Reporting Services?”

Fortunately the folks at Microsoft thought of this, and created a version of Reporting Services that runs in Local, or what Microsoft calls Client mode. There are several ways to use client mode, you can bind the report right to the database if you wish, or to an object. However if you have an application that’s been around for a bit, or maybe you’ve been around for a bit, chances are you have a lot of ADO.NET DataSets you’d love to use for data in a report. Today we’ll look at how to bind those data sets to a SQL Server Reporting Services report.

Let’s say you have created an application to work with the AdventureWorks2008 database. You user has now asked you for one last feature. They wish to display a list of Vendors in a report. They want to preview the report, print it, and be able to export it to a PDF format.

Based on your experience you know that SQL Server Reporting Services would be a good choice. However your client does not have an instance of SQL Server Reporting Services running in their corporation. Thus the path is clear, use SQL Server Reporting Services in Client mode.

Prior to beginning our work, we’ll need to do two basic setup steps. First, if you don’t have it already, you will need to download the Adventure Works 2008 database from CodePlex. Install it following their instructions. Here is the current location for AdventureWorks2008:

http://www.codeplex.com/MSFTDBProdSamples/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=18407

Now open up Visual Studio 2008 and create a new C# WinForms application. Note that while the ReportViewer control we’ll be using works fine in WinForms, ASP.Net, or WPF, for simplicity we’ll use a WinForms application. Give your project a meaningful name (I used ReportingServicesLocal).

Create the DataSource

Normally Reporting Services knows what tables and columns are available because you have setup a connection to a database. In this scenario however, we are going to bind the report to an in memory ADO.NET DataTable.

At design time then Reporting Services does not know about the DataSet, and so we must create a surrogate for Reporting Services. Thus we’ll create a special type of XML schema definition to stand in for our not yet created DataSet.

To accomplish this, first we need to create the Data Source schema by following these steps:

1. Right click on the project in the Solution Explorer window.

2. Select Add, New Item.

3. Click on the Data leaf of the Visual C# Items branch in the Add New Item window.

4. Pick the DataSet item. Give it a meaningful name, such as VendorList.xsd.

Now we need to add a table to the DataSet.

1. In your toolbox, under DataSet find the Data Table tool and drag it onto the design surface.

2. Click the DataTable1 and rename it to Vendors.

The last step in the process is to add our columns to the Vendors DataTable we just created.

1. Right click on the name of your DataTable and pick Add, Column from the pop up menu.

2. For the first column type in VendorName. Note that if we needed to, we could now go to the properties window and change the DataType to something other than the default of System.String. For this lab, everything we’ll use is a string so this won’t be needed.

3. Repeat step 2, adding these column names: AddressLine1, AddressLine2, City, StateProvinceName, PostalCode

When done it should look like:

Create the Report.

Now that we have a schema, we’re ready to create the report and add the components to it. To create the report, follow these basic steps.

1. Right click on the project and select Add, New Item.

2. In the pop up window, go to the Reporting leaf under the Visual C# branch.

3. Pick “Report”, and give the report a meaningful name such as VendorList.rdlc.

<image>

Now that the report is created, we need to add the components and data columns to it.

1. With the blank report, drag a Table control onto the report body.

2. Open the Data Sources window by selecting Data, Show Data Sources from the Visual Studio menu.

3. You should see the VendorList DataSet, under it the Vendors DataTable, and under it the columns.

4. Drag the VendorName to the first column of the table. Next, drag the City to the second column, and the StateProvinceName to the third.

5. Right click on the column header for StateProvinceName and pick “Insert Column to the Right”.

6. Drag the PostalCode to this newly inserted column. Your report should now look something like:

Adding the Report Viewer to the Windows Form

Now that the setup tasks are complete, it’s time to get to the user interface ready. First we’ll do some basic setup of the form.

1. When you created the basic project Visual Studio created a default Windows Form, Form1.cs. Start by changing the Text property to read “Report Viewer”.

2. While we’re at it, let’s change the (Name) property to frmReportViewer.

Now add the Report Viewer control to the form.

1. In the toolbox, navigate to the Reporting area, and drag a MicrosoftReportViewer control onto the form. Resize so it takes up the lower 90% or so of the form.

2. Change the name to rvwMain (or something meaningful).

Next add a button to the form. We’ll use it to trigger the report.

1. From the Common Controls area of the toolbox, drag a button control onto the form.

2. Change the (Name) property to btnDataSet.

3. Change the Text property to DataSet.

4. Double Click on the button to open up it’s code behind.

We’ll be supplying the data to the ADO.Net dataset using SQL Server, so we need to go to the top of the form and add a reference to the System.Data.SqlClient.

using System.Data.SqlClient;

Now let’s go into the btnDataSet_Click event, and add some code to fill our dataset. This code snippet will bind to our local SQL Server, create a command to do a simple select statement to a view, and fill the dataset.

  /* Fill the Dataset ------------------------------------*/
  string qry = "select v.Name as VendorName "
                  + ", v.AddressLine1 "
                  + ", v.AddressLine2 "
                  + ", v.City "
                  + ", v.StateProvinceName "
                  + ", v.PostalCode "
               + "from Purchasing.vVendorWithAddresses v "
              + "order by v.Name ";

  string connectionstring = @"Server=(local);"
    +
"Database=AdventureWorks2008;Trusted_Connection=True;";

  SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionstring);
  SqlCommand cmd =
new SqlCommand(qry, connection);

  SqlDataAdapter daVendor = new SqlDataAdapter();
  daVendor.SelectCommand = cmd;
  DataSet dsVendors =
new
DataSet();
  daVendor.Fill(dsVendors);

Note that in the first line of our select statement, we had to use v.Name as VendorName. The column names we return from our dataset must match the column names we entered in the Data Source back in Exercise 2 Step 3. Fortunately SQL easy to use “AS” syntax makes this simple.

Also, even though in this example we use SQL Server, the connection could be to any Data Source such as MySQL or Oracle. The important thing is we wind up with a DataSet to bind to.

In the same btnDataSet_Click method we now need to tell the report viewer control which report to run, then where to get it’s data. To tell the ReportViewer control to use a local report (as opposed to a report residing on a Reporting Services Server) we need to set the ReportEmbeddedResource property.

rvwMain.LocalReport.ReportEmbeddedResource = "ReportingServicesLocal.VendorList.rdlc";

Note the format of the string we pass in. It has the name of the project, then a dot, then the name of the report complete with it’s rdlc extension. You should also know this is case sensitive.

Now we need to tell the report where our data really is. To do this, we’ll tell it to bind the Vendor data table from the VendorList data source to the dataset we generated in the step above

  rvwMain.LocalReport.DataSources.Add(

    new Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportDataSource(
    "VendorList_Vendors", dsVendors.Tables[0]));

We need to create a new ReportDataSource to pass into the Add method of the reports DataSources. In the constructor for the ReportDataSource we pass in two parameters. The first is the name of the DataTable we are binding to.

Note that it’s syntax is a bit odd, you have to address it with first the DataSet name, then use an underscore to append the name of the specific DataTable.

The second parameter is the specific table from the dataset to bind to. Since we only had 1 we can use the simple .Tables[0] syntax shown here. We could have also given it a specific name.

One final note, in this simple example we are only binding one data source. However it’s possible for reports to have multiple data tables contained in them. To bind each one, we would simply have created a data table for each in the XSD, then added the code to the step above to read each one in, then bound them in this step by repeating this line of code for each one.

Finally we’re ready to display the report. Simply add this line to trigger the generation of the report.

      rvwMain.RefreshReport();

Test your application.

Everything is now setup, you should be ready to run.

1. Launch the app from Visual Studio.

2. Once open, click on the DataSet button.

3. Your screen should look something like:
