SQL Server 2008 R2 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 PowerPivot Planning and Deployment

clock July 17, 2010 08:40 by author Jervis

Microsoft® SQL Server® PowerPivot is an innovative data analysis technology that redefines how organizations of all kinds deliver and succeed with business intelligence (BI). The focus shifts from IT delivering corporate BI solutions toa managed BI collaboration environment that gives users the power to get timely and reliable information to make more relevant decisions. PowerPivot does not replace corporate BI, but complements it with managed, self-service solutions.

Providing business insights to all employees means giving producers of intelligence access to the best data analysis tools and reliable access to trustworthy data, as well as facilitating knowledge-sharing and collaboration within teamsof producers and consumers of intelligence and across departmental boundaries. It means leveraging the network of power users in each department, the ones who create departmental and team solutions, assist colleagues in ad-hoc analysis, and, when a centralized solution is best, communicate BI requirements back to the IT department. It also means implementing reliable BI monitoring and management processes to ensure availability and performance for mission-critical, self-service BI applications. PowerPivot enables organizations to extend the reach of BI in the enterprise from corporate to team and individual spaces, while at the same time increasing IT management and operations efficiency.

PowerPivot integrates with Microsoft Office Excel® 2010 to give users unmatched computational power for advanced data analysis with a familiar user interface. PowerPivot also integrates with Microsoft SharePoint® Server 2010 to establish a managed, self-service BI environment that takes advantage of all the standard SharePoint features, such as role-based security, compliance policies, workflows, and versioning, and introduces new features and capabilities, such as PowerPivot Gallery and automatic data refreshing for shared workbook applications. And PowerPivot features a management dashboard that lets users monitor shared applications, track usage patterns over time, drill down to reveal hidden details, discover mission-critical solutions, and make sure appropriate server resources are provisioned.

Establishing a managed, self-service BI environment entails deploying the PowerPivot for Excel add-in on workstations running Microsoft Office 2010 and PowerPivot for SharePoint on SharePoint application servers. These deployments can be performed independently. The PowerPivot for Excel add-in does not require a SharePoint environment and the SharePoint environment does not require PowerPivot for Excel on all workstations. The Excel add-in is a requirement only for those creating and publishing workbook applications. Other users can access published workbook applications in SharePoint via a Web browser, with the same performance and most of the features as the Excel client. However, planning and coordination are required to determine the best deployment sequence and configuration options, provision adequate storage capacities and system resources, and optimize the managed BI collaboration environment for high availability and performance.

This white paper contains information for technical decision makers, IT administrators, and system architects who are planning to deploy PowerPivot technology in an enterprise environment. This paper assumes the audience is already familiar with the Windows Server® operating system, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, SQL Server, online analytical processing (OLAP), and self-service BI. A high-level understanding of the new features and technologies in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is also helpful.

DNN Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: What You Choose? Joomla or DotNetNuke

clock July 15, 2010 07:54 by author Jervis

Joomla and DotNetNuke are only two content management systems among many; however they are often regarded as best-of-breed for their respective technology stacks. DotNetNuke is an ASP.Net CMS written in Visual Basic, while Joomla makes use of the ever-popular PHP. Continuing in the path of our previous articles , we're going to examine the two frameworks to provide an impartial view of the advantages and disadvantages of both.

DotNetNuke  was created by Shaun Walker in 2002. Based on the 'IBuySpy Portal' code Microsoft released to promote their ASP.Net framework, the application quickly acquired a large development community. Originally named the ‘IBuySpy Workshop’, the moniker was later changed to reflect the 'Nuke' suffix commonly affected by open source content management systems. The DotNetNuke Corporation was formed in 2006 to be a steering committee overseeing development of the framework which, as of July 2010, is in active use on over 600,000 websites.

Joomla  was established in August 2005 as a fork of the Mambo CMS project. Senior developers, including Andrew Eddie, were unhappy with the direction Mambo was taking. So, in an open letter   to the Mambo community, they announced their intention to form their own development team. The new project got its name from a community vote, Joomla being an anglicized form of an Arabic word meaning 'all together'. The first version of Joomla, released in September 2005, was essentially a re-branded release of Mambo 4.5.23; but since then the previous codebase has been expanded upon at an astounding pace, resulting in it becoming one of the leading PHP based content management systems. 2008 saw Joomla 1.5 released to much fanfare, as well as one of the lead developers winning a Packt award for most valued person. Today it continues to go from strength to strength, with prestigious firms like IHOP and CitiBank making use of Joomla both internally and on public facing sites.

Core Functionality: Both DNN and Joomla offer similar functionality at first glance, but it soon becomes apparent that DotNetNuke offers much more straight out of the box. Joomla supports basic functions like polls, blog layouts and a built-in search engine. It even has some more advanced options which are not available in other PHP based content management systems, for example load balancing and a trash bin to ensure articles are not deleted accidently. However, in comparison to DNN’s much wider range of built in functionality like database replication, events management and a photo gallery, the initial selection seems a little weak. The lack of a built-in forum system can particularly hurt Joomla based websites which wish to form communities, although there are plenty of forum bridges available as extensions.

Customization and Third Party Extensions
: What Joomla lacks in core functionality, it tries its best to make up for with third party extensions. The sitemaps, wikis and multilingual content which DotNetNuke supports by default are freely available as open source plugins. A common saying in the Joomla world is that 80% of any site is an add-on, which arguably means the core framework is light-weight enough to support any type of site without necessarily coming with everything and the kitchen sink installed by default. Templates for Joomla are easy to create, and this is reflected by the vast number available across the Internet. The low barrier to entry can sometimes result in wading through a morass of poorly designed themes, but higher end commercial designs are often stunningly well put together.

Where Joomla does fall down is in the flexibility it provides. Although there are add-ons for most things working with the framework can often feel restrictive, especially when it comes to design. The templating system is fairly proscriptive, and so themes tend to be orientated around similar basic layouts. DotNetNuke allows for greater freedom of expression, giving the opportunity to create a more unique site style. DNN’s assumption that most customers will have some development knowledge may put many off, but also allows for more flexibility in the same manner that Microsoft’s SQL Server is more flexible than Access.

Underlying Technology
: In any comparison between DotNetNuke and Joomla it is necessary to take into account the different technologies on which they are built. Joomla uses PHP with a MySQL backend, a combination that is prevalent in the web hosting sphere. By contrast DotNetNuke makes use of Microsoft’s ASP.Net framework which, while arguably superior on a technical level, is also more expensive to use in a shared web-hosting environment. That said many small and medium sized businesses already have servers which run Microsoft’s Internet Information Service (IIS), which nullifies the open source software stack’s price advantage.

Both Joomla and DotNetNuke can interact with LDAP based systems like Active Directory. However DNN has an advantage due to ASP.Net’s built-in membership and role providers, which allow businesses with their own development team to tie the system into their back-end more closely. Similarly the Visual Studio line of development environments makes code modification easier than most PHP based solutions. DotNetNuke is really designed for corporate intranets which need to integrate with existing systems, and is built around this kind of functionality. By contrast Joomla is more orientated towards providing a quick but expandable web presence.

Support: The DotNetNuke framework offers several different levels of support. The basic ‘Community’ edition provides assistance primarily through developer forums, while the paid-for ‘Professional’ edition offers unlimited tier 2 online and email support. The ‘Elite’ version even incorporates live phone support with a 2 hour maximum response time. Joomla’s development team does not directly offer commercial support, but a number of third-party companies have built up considerable expertise with the system. These now offer training and support in much the same way as a Microsoft certified partner could support SharePoint

The key issue which may sway business users in the direction of DNN is the fact that the professional and elite versions are officially tested and verified. This means they are guaranteed to be as stable as possible, making them a good choice for business critical applications. These versions also offer health monitoring and file integrity checking, which can ensure that potential issues can be detected and resolved early on.

E-Commerce: A qualitative evaluation  of the key success attributes for online sales sites, made for the 11th International World Wide Web conference, highlighted what had been known for a long time; security and integrity are essential for any E-Commerce website. When comparing DotNetNuke and Joomla it can be seen that both frameworks support similar basic security features, like SSL encryption and email verification. However the professional edition of DNN also supports some extra features, such as granular privileges and sandboxing, which just give it the edge over Joomla in terms of functionality. When considering past performance it’s best to turn to Secunia, an independent security consultancy which maintains a list of vulnerability assessments for close to 30,000 different pieces of software.

As of July 2010 Secunia’s website shows 28 vulnerability advisories  for Joomla, of which none are unpatched. DotNetNuke has only 7 total advisories , and similarly none unpatched. In both cases it seems that the teams are able to resolve their security issues, but the increased number of advisories for Joomla might make some business users wary of another potential zero-day exploit.

When considering actual E-Commerce functionality, all editions of DNN come with affiliate tracking and a shopping cart included as standard. By comparison Joomla supports most e-commerce functions through third-party extensions, and hence isn’t ready for Internet marketing out of the box.

Integrating some of the available shopping carts into Joomla can be difficult, and may result in them looking tacked onto the design. This likely isn’t an issue for smaller businesses just starting to dip a toe into online sales, but may become a limiting factor when looking to upgrade a few years down the line.

Ease of Use
: The inline administration model of DotNetNuke allows for quick and easy editing of content, whereas Joomla requires you to sign into a separate area of the site before making changes. DNN’s use of the drag and drop paradigm when modifying the position of modules is especially useful compared to Joomla’s more clunky back-end system. Beyond that the two frameworks share similar ease of use features with mass uploading, built in macro languages and search engine friendly URLs available by default.

In a comparison between Joomla and DotNetNuke, several things become evident. DNN arguably has an advantage in core functionality, however is lacking some of the third party extensions which make Joomla so appealing. Joomla’s style of administration is not as elegant as DotNetNuke’s in-line editing, and generally the framework is not as flexible. However it can be very quick to get a site based on a generic layout up and running. As such Joomla is likely ideal for making quick, inexpensive and moderately interactive websites.

DotNetNuke is aimed more at the creation of business scale web sites and web applications. Tight integration with existing systems and a usable e-commerce solution out of the box make it a winning formula for companies who want to set up an initial online sales presence. At the same time the stable, professionally certified and supported version is ideal for use in business critical applications, as well as high traffic community hubs.

Conclusion

Both Joomla and DNN are good. It depends on you. So, if you’re looking for Joomla or DNN hosting, ASPHostPortal will help to host your site. You can start from our lowest price $ 5.00/month to get this hosting.

ASP.NET 4.0 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: What's New in the Visual Studio 2010 Editor

clock July 13, 2010 11:38 by author Jervis

New in Visual Studio 2010

Enhanced Docking Behavior
Document windows are no longer constrained to the editing frame of the integrated development environment (IDE). You can now dock document windows to the edges of the IDE, or move them anywhere on the desktop (this includes a second monitor). If two related document windows are open and visible, for example, a designer view and an editor view of the same Windows Form, changes that were made in one window will immediately take effect in the other window.

Tool windows can now move freely between docking at the edges of the IDE, floating outside the IDE, or filling part or all of the document frame. They remain in a dockable state at all times.

Zoom
In any code editing window or text editing window, you can quickly zoom in or out by pressing and holding the CTRL key and moving the scroll wheel on the mouse. You can also zoom textual tool windows, for example, the Output window. The zoom feature does not work on design surfaces or on tool windows that contain icons, for example, the Toolbox or Solution Explorer.

Box Selection
In previous releases of Visual Studio, you could select a rectangular region of text by holding down the Alt key while selecting a region with the mouse. You could then copy or delete the selected text. VS 2010 adds the following new capabilities to the box selection feature:

- Text insertion: Type into a box selection to insert the new text on every selected line.
- Paste: Paste the contents of one box selection into another.
- Zero-length boxes: Make a vertical selection zero characters wide to create a multi-line insertion point for new or copied text.

You can use these capabilities to rapidly operate on groups of statements, such as changing access modifiers, setting fields, or adding comments.

Call Hierarcy
Call Hierarchy, which is available in Visual C# and Visual C++, displays the following parts of your code so that you can navigate through it more effectively:

- Calls to and from a selected method, property, or constructor.
- Implementations of an interface member.
- Overrides of a virtual or abstract member.

This can help you better understand how code flows, evaluate the effects of changes, and explore possible execution paths by examining complex chains of method calls and other entry points in several levels of code.

Call Hierarchy is available at design time, unlike the call stack that is displayed by the debugger.

The member name appears in a pane of the Call Hierarchy window. If you expand the member node, Calls To member name and Calls From member name subnodes appear. If you expand the Calls To node, all members that call the selected member are displayed. If you expand the Calls From node, all members that are called by the selected member are displayed. You can also expand the subnode members into Calls To and Calls From nodes. This lets you navigate into the stack of callers.

Navigate to
You can use the Navigate To feature to search for a symbol or file in the source code.

Navigate To lets you find a specific location in the solution or explore elements in the solution. It helps you pick a good set of matching results from a query.

You can search for keywords that are contained in a symbol by using Camel casing and underscore characters to divide the symbol into keywords.

Highlighting References
When you click a symbol in the source code, all instances of that symbol are highlighted in the document.

The highlighted symbols may include declarations and references, and many other symbols that Find All References would return. These include the names of classes, objects, variables, methods, and properties.

In Visual Basic code, keywords for many control structures are also highlighted.

To move to the next or the previous highlighted symbol, press CTRL+SHIFT+DOWN ARROW or CTRL+SHIFT+UP ARROW.

Generate from Usage
The Generate From Usage feature lets you use classes and members before you define them. You can generate a stub for any undefined class, constructor, method, property, field, or enum that you want to use but have not yet defined. You can generate new types and members without leaving your current location in code, This minimizes interruption to your workflow.

Generate From Usage supports programming styles such as test-first development.

IntelliSense Suggestion Mode
IntelliSense now provides two alternatives for IntelliSense statement completion, completion mode and suggestion mode. Use suggestion mode for situations where classes and members are used before they are defined.

In suggestion mode, when you type in the editor and then commit the entry, the text you typed is inserted into the code. When you commit an entry in completion mode, the editor shows the entry that is highlighted on the members list.

When an IntelliSense window is open, you can press CTRL+ALT+SPACEBAR to toggle between completion mode and suggestion mode.

Reseller Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Resell Web Hosting in Five Easy Steps

clock July 13, 2010 11:24 by author Jervis

We’ll outline the five basic steps necessary to create a Web hosting business through reselling accounts that are provisioned in a reseller Web hosting data center. While there are many details that are required to be successful in any business, these five steps should get you started, and with some diligence and persistence - you may become a sizable Web hosting venture.

Reselling Web Hosting - Step 1: Get an Exceptional Domain Name.

It may be obvious to you, but having the proper domain for your Web hosting venture is critical to your success. Why? There are two basic reasons: branding (recall) and search engine optimization. In order to sell Web hosting to your prospects, they first have to be able to find you. That is, they have to know that you offer Web hosting accounts for sale.

The most common form of online research is the ubiquitous search engine.

There are really only 2 that matter: Google and Yahoo! In order to come up on the first few pages of any relevant search for Web hosting related keywords, it is imperative that your domain name contain some form of that keyword phrase. You can prove this to yourself by conducting a search for the keyword, ‘hosting’ at www.google.com. You will notice that many of the top results contain the word ‘host’ or ‘hosting’ in the domain name. It simply gives you an advantage in search rankings.

So where to get such a name? You can go to a good domain search site like, www.whois.sc (use the domain explorer tab) and see if there is a name that has not yet been registered. The chances of a great, short, memorable name being available is low (but not zero) - so you can increase the odds of getting a great name in two ways: get a domain that is expiring or buy a name from the current owner.

There are many great names that are expiring each day - that is, the current owner has not renewed the domain by paying the yearly registration fees. In fact, around 20,000 expired domains come back into circulation each day. Sometimes the owner forgets, sometimes they lose interest - in any event, you can snag a great name if you are willing to do some research.

Alternatively you can simply buy a domain name from the current owner.

Sites such as www.sedo.com can assist you in finding eager sellers for a wide variety of domain names. Okay - now you’ve got a great domain name - let’s move to step 2.

Reselling Web Hosting - Step 2: Finding and Setting up a Great Web Hosting Reseller Account.

Unless you want to set up your own domain registration process, get connectivity from major bandwidth providers, and have a warehouse full of high end computers - you’ll want to get a reseller account from an established supplier. A good reseller account will offer tools (control panel) to manage multiple domains and accounts from one central location. That way, you can log in once and check the billing and provisioning status of all of your customer accounts.

”The most important thing to look for is a provider that provides an uptime guarantee and a proven track record of upholding that guarantee. If the provider you go with has frequent downtime you are destined to fail before getting started. Do not let the resources in the plan or the price cloud your judgement when looking for a stable provider to launch your new company.”

Reselling Web Hosting - Step 3: Set up a Great Website and Order Form.

You have to look professional in order to convince customers to sign up with you as a Web host. That means a website designed by a professional. You can either hire a designer (expensive) or use a template (inexpensive) like those found at: www.templatemonster.com. The benefits of hiring a designer is that you get a unique website that looks exactly the way you want. It may cost you quite a bit, though. In contrast, a template will be somewhat cookie-cutter, but will look professional and help you save some money during your startup process.

Whichever way you decide to go, make sure that you pay close attention to the sign up process. Make the order form as simple and easy to fill out as possible. If you can have something default checked to save time, by all means do so. Be sure to include a summary page of the order so that your customers can review their order before purchase.

Reselling Web Hosting - Step 4: Driving Qualified Traffic to Your Website.

You can’t get customers without having some traffic to your new website. There are complete textbooks written on how to market and gain website traffic. We will focus you on only one possible traffic-driving solution, but one which has proven to work for many small online businesses - Google’s AdWords advertising.

You can see a complete and detailed step-by-step tutorial on using Google AdWords here: www.sitepoint.com/article/adwords-select-parts-1-4.

Below is a quick-start guide to getting your Google traffic flowing in a few hours:

Setting Up a Google AdWords Account Step-by-Step

Okay, take a deep breath. Settle into the chair in front of your computer and get ready to go. Follow these steps exactly:

1. Navigate your browser to: https://adwords.google.com/select and click on the ‘Sign Up Now’ area.

2. Select the appropriate language and geographical targeting – ‘Regions and cities’ if you are a local business, ‘Global or nationwide’ if you serve all regions (we’ll use this setting for our example). Click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

3. Next you choose your countries. If you are a North American business, we highly recommend selecting ‘United States’ only. To do this - go to the right hand box entitled ‘Selected Countries’ and highlight ‘All Countries’ with your mouse. Then click the ‘Remove’ button. The ‘Selected Countries’ box will now be empty. Go to the left column and highlight ‘United States’ - then click the ‘Add’ button. Click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

4. Now you name your ad group and create your first online ad. Don’t worry - you can always go back and edit your ad at anytime. Just have fun with it for now! To get started, think up a name that you want to call your first group of ads. Type this name into the box labeled: ‘Name this Ad Group’.

Now go to section A: ‘Create Ads’ just below. You simply fill in the boxes and Google does this cool ‘automatic update’ that shows you what your ad will look like as you are filling in the boxes. When you have an ad that you like - click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

5. Choose the keywords that will trigger your ad. If you sell ‘Unix Web Hosting’ then start with that keyword. If you sell ‘ASP.NET Hosting’ then start with that. Once you have typed in a search term, you can always use the ‘Keyword Suggestion Tool’ link on the same page to expand your list. Google will automatically suggest words that may expand your traffic. Be sure to do a reality check against this list - it’s automated and some terms may not be appropriate for your business. Once you have a list of keywords, click the ‘Save Keywords’ button to continue.

6. Choose your maximum bid. We always set this to $.05 (five cents) to start. This is Google’s minimum bid amount. You can always change it later if you need more traffic. Type in .05 and click the ‘Calculate Estimates’ button. Ignore the resulting estimates - they are almost always wrong.

Simply click the ‘Save and Continue’ button. At this step Google will ask if you want to create another ad group - simply bypass this step by clicking the ‘Continue to Step 3’ button.

7. Now you specify you daily budget. We suggest being conservative here as well. You can always increase this later. For now - figure out how much you can spend each month for traffic and divide by 30. Put in an amount that is this number or even lower. We usually start with $5 per day as a maximum.

When you’ve decided, simply click the ‘Save and Continue’ button.

8. Entering your contact information and password. This step requires you to give Google a valid email address that you can check - in order to send you to the final confirmation and billing step. Fill in your email and pick a password that you can remember - preferably one that has at least 1 numeral and is difficult to duplicate easily.

At this point you should see the following message: ”Thank you for signing up with AdWords. Please check your email ([email protected]) for a message from Google containing a link to our verification program.” Follow the link in that message to confirm that we have your correct email address.

9. Check your email and finish setting up your account. Go to your email and retrieve the Google email. Follow the link inside - this will verify that your email is valid. Then simply login to your AdWords account using the email address and password that you supplied in the last step.

10. Once you log in you will see the following message: ”Note: Your account hasn’t been activated. Payment information is required in order to run your ads. Please provide your payment information on the Billing Preferences page in the “My Account” section. Typically, your ads will begin running almost immediately after you submit this information.” Simply follow the ‘Billing Preferences’ link and enter your credit card information. When complete click the ‘Save Changes’ button.

11. Your AdWords account is now live! You will see traffic from your ads coming to your site almost immediately if you have selected popular keywords.

Reselling Web Hosting - Step 5: Differentiate Your Offering!

You can’t expect to sell your web hosting to anyone of you adopt a ‘me-to’ attitude. Make certain that you are different in some significant way from other Web hosting offerings out there. You can differentiate by creating a unique special offer, by having an exceptional promotion or giveaway, or by bundling services that other companies don’t offer together - it doesn’t matter exactly what is different about your web hosting offer - just make sure it’s different.

One last thing - remember to give a high level of customer service, or your new found customers will flee to a more attentive competitor.

Good luck in reselling web hosting. If you follow the five steps outlined above, you’ll be on your way to a great new business venture!

SQL Server 2008 R2 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Top 10 Features of SQL 2008 R2

clock July 13, 2010 05:31 by author Jervis

Introduction

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is the latest release of SQL Server. This article will introduce the top 10 features and benefits of SQL Server 2008 R2. The “R2” tag indicates this is an intermediate release of SQL Server and not a major revision. However, there are a number of interesting new features for both DBAs and developers alike. At the time of this article, R2 is available as a CTP (Community Technology Preview). In addition to new features, there are two new editions as well, SQL Server 2008 R2 Datacenter and SQL Server 2008 R2 Parallel Data Warehouse. If you want to get professional hosting with reliable price, you can start with ASPHostPortal. You can get SQL Server 2008 R2 hosting only with $ 5.00/month.

Report Builder 3.0

Report Builder is a tool set for developing rich reports that can be delivered over the web. Some of the features of Report Builder include the ability to create reports containing graphs, charts, tables, and printing controls. In addition, Report Builder also supports drill downs and sorting. If you are familiar with the third party tool Crystal Reports, then you have good idea of what to expect from Report Builder.

New features in SQL 2008 R2 / Report Builder 3.0 include: Map Layers, which can hold spatial and analytical data and will integrate with Microsoft Virtual Earth. Indicators, these are gauges used to show the state of one value. Report Parts, this object can be reused or shared between multiple reports. Aggregate Calculating, this allows you to calculate the total value of other aggregate calculated totals.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Datacenter

The new Datacenter edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 is targeted towards Enterprise Edition users who require a greater performance platform. The new edition will support 256 logical processors, high numbers of instances, and as much memory as the operating system will support.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Parallel Data Warehouse

Another new SQL Server edition, Parallel Data Warehouse, formally codenamed “Madison”, specializes in handling extremely large amounts of data. This new version uses massively parallel processing to spread large tables over multiple SQL nodes. The multiple nodes are handled by a propriety Microsoft technology called Ultra Shared Nothing. This new technology is described as a Control Node spreading queries to Computer Nodes, evenly distributed, then collecting the results.

StreamInsight

New in SQL Server 2008 R2 is component called StreamInsight. This interesting component allows streaming data to be analyzed on the fly. Meaning the data is processed directly from the source stream prior to being saved in a SQL Server table. This could be extremely handy if you’re running a real time system and need to analyze data but can’t afford the latency of a committed write to a table first. Examples usually cited for this application include stock trading streams, click stream web analytics, and industrial process controls. Multiple input streams can be simultaneously monitored.

Master Data Services

Master Data Services (MDS) is both a concept and a product. The concept of a Master Data Service is that there is a central data gate keeper of core business data. Data items such as customer billing addresses, employee/customer names, and product names should be centrally managed so that all consuming applications have the same information. The Microsoft example given is a company that has a customer address record in the customer table but a different address in the mailing table. A Master Data Service application would ensure that all tables would have only one correct address. While an MDS can be a homegrown application, SQL Server 2008 R2 includes an application and an interface to manage the central data.

PowerPivot for SharePoint

PowerPivot is an end-user tool that works in conjunction with SharePoint, SQL Server 2008 R2, and Excel 2010 to process large amounts of data in seconds. PowerPivot works like an Excel Pivot Table, and includes analytical capabilities.

Data-Tier Application

A Data-Tier Application (abbreviated as DAC –no idea what the C stands for, and not to be confused with the Windows Data Access Components also abbreviated as DAC ) is an object that stores all the needed database information for a project, such as login, tables, and procedures into one package that can be consumed by Visual Studio. By creating a Data-Tier Application, a SQL Server package version could be saved with each Visual Studio build of your application. This would allow application code builds to be married to a database build in an easily managed way.

Unicode Compression

SQL Server 2008 R2 uses a new algorithm known as Simple Compression Scheme for Unicode storage. This reduces the amount of disk spaced used by Unicode characters. This new format happens automatically and is managed by the SQL Server engine so no programming changes are required of the DBA.

SQL Server Utility

The new SQL Server Utility is a repository object for centrally controlling multiple SQL Server instances. Performance data and configuration policies can be stored in a single Utility. The Utility also includes an Explorer tool where multi-server dashboards can be created.

Multi Server Dashboards

While the SQL Server Management Studio could always connection to multiple servers, each was managed independently with no central view of all of them. Now with SQL Server 2008 R2, Dashboards showing combined server data can be created.

Magento Hosting with ASPHostPortal :: Creating New Theme and Apply It to A Magento Store

clock July 12, 2010 14:00 by author Jervis

After finishing Magento installation its time to look at how you want your store to look, what theme will it have , and will the same theme feature across all your stores if you have more then one ?  Our tutorial shows you how to duplicate the default theme and begin to modify it to give you greater flexibility on the look and feel of your new e-commerce store.

Magentos’ file structure is divided into two key locations , one containing the files which our end user will have access to such as css and JavaScript and one containing the block, containers and actual code that will build up any given page.  For the default installations these paths are as follows when magento was installed to the root of your site:

For the building blocks of page construction – app/design/frontend/default/default/
For the accessible browser assets – skins/frontend/default/default/

In the installation above you can see that the file structure represent the hierarchy of the design aspects, in this case app/design/frontend/instance/theme/

When building a site it is a good idea to have a separate name for your instance and your theme , for example you may decide to call your instance e-commerce, and your theme standard-blue.  Giving your structures and assets a strong naming convention will help you to organise and navigate your files with ease.

So the first stage to building a new theme is to copy the two above folders and rename them as you see fit.  This will give you two new sets of files to upload to your server via FTP.

Magento will now be able to access your new instance and theme and that means we can apply our new files as standard to our store.  To do so log into your Magento admin area and choose ‘System’, from the drop down menu choose ‘Configuration’.  Once the configuration screen loads choose the ‘Design’ option from the menu on the left hand side.  If you have followed our tutorial ‘Setup a new store’ you can choose the store you wish to configure the design for by selecting it form the drop down menu in the configuration scope.

Within the design configuration panel there are two key elements we want to change, the value next to the label ‘Current Package Name’, change this to your new instance name, for example e-commerce’.  The value next to the ‘Default’ label under the themes section needs to be changed to your theme name, for example ’standard-blue’.

With these changes made choose ‘Save Config’ to have magento start to use your new files.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Shared Datasets in SQL Server 2008 R2

clock July 10, 2010 09:44 by author Jervis

Overview

In the spatial data series we looked at free-form text based address data and worked towards developing a Geospatial Dashboard . In this artilce we will look at using one of the new enhancements introduced in SQL Sever 2008 R2 - Shared Datasets. Now, you can get SQL Server 2008 R2 hosting with only $ 5.00/month. You can get this opportunity in ASPHostPortal.

Why Use Shared Datasets ?

Our BI-Satellite application performed the below tasks:

1) Used data from a SQL Server table, read this data in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and geocoded it using Bing Maps web services.
2) Stored the data in SQL Server Spatial datatypes.
3) We used the dataset in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and developed a report using the Map control.
4) Finally, made the data in our SQL Server table more detailed and developed a scaled down version of a Geospatial Dashboard.

To keep the focus on the technical study of the geospatial data, we kept the data relatively simple. Consider this data as the regional sales data from a company. When someone would like to view the report of sales of a salesperson , or if the senior management of the company would like to check the details of the performance of all the salesmen of the company it would be mandatory that either the geocode details of the salespeople's locations are stored in the database whenever a new record is entered or they are updated each time a location value changes.

Adding to this complexity, consider a scenario that departmental stores in some regions have shifted from one place to another. So effectively their geocode values would also change. In these cases, one would be required to maintain a batch process where each change in address would continuously require updating.

But step 2 and step 3 can be eliminated by a solution integrating SSIS and SSRS. We can use a SSIS data processing extension from SSRS, and geocode values on a "on demand" basis. SSIS packages as explained in Part I would geocode values, and this package can be used as a data source in SSRS using SSIS data processing extension. Explanation of implementation details of the same is out of scope of this article, so we would take it as granted that we have implemented this solution.

Now when we use such data source and create a dataset, it would be easier to implement for theIT staff but the same cannot be expected from business users who would need the same data for use in their reports using Reports Builder. As a solution we can opt to make the data source Shared. But when there is a complex process involved in extracting a dataset, one would also want to share the same to make it reusable and easy to use for business users. In our case the dataset cannot be created using a SQL Query as our data source type is the SSIS Data Processing Extension. So we need to create the dataset in a way that can be shared by multiple reports and business users without requiring them to get into the details of how to extract this data.

How to use Shared Datasets ?

The question of "Why" we would want to use shared datasets is now hopefully clear, but the question of "How" we would used shared datasets is yet to be answered and "What" are the advantages of the same is yet to be seen. And we would look at the same by implementing it with our BI App. As discussion of SSIS Data Processing Extension is out of the scope, we would use the same "Address" table in the normal way. Follow the steps below to implement the solution:

1) The first point that should be made is that shared datasets can only use a shared data source.

2) Right-click on the shared data sources folder in the solution explorer pane, and select "Add New Data Source". Create a connection to the database which has your "Address" table and name it something relevant. After you have created your shared data source, you would find a .rds file listed in this folder.

3) Now add a new shared data set by right-clicking the Shared Datasets directory and selecting "Add New Dataset". You should be able to see the dialog as shown in the below screenshot. Select data from Address table and name it "FamousBuildingsSharedDS". After that a .rsd file would get created, which would be listed in this folder.

4) Deploy this data source and dataset.

5) Open Reports Builder and create a new blank report. On the reports data pane, right-click Datasets directory and select "Add Dataset". Select "Use a shared dataset" option and click on the browse button. Navigate to the directory where your shared dataset would have got deployed (normally with default deployment settings in native installation mode, you would find it in datasets directory). You should be able to find the dataset we just deployed in step 2 as shown in the screenshot below. Use this dataset and name it "MyDS".

6) Now just to check that this data is accessible, add a table to the report. Select a few fields from this dataset and your report should look like the below screenshot.

Advantages of using Shared Datasets

1) The first and biggest advantage in my view is reusability. Shared datasets can be used by multiple reports, and embedded datasets are limited to the scope of report in which it is defined. Also as we discussed in this article, if you have a specific complex or a generalized dataset, and the same dataset or it's subset is used by multiple reports, it would be more efficient to implement a generic version of the dataset by using shared dataset feature.

2) As multiple reports are using the same dataset definition, this makes the definition more centralized and easier to maintain. Changing the definition of the dataset at a single location would cascade changes to all the reports using this dataset. This is an advantage, but it should be used with caution.

3) By separating the dataset element from the definition of the report, it becomes easy to individually configure datasets on a broad level. When datasets are consumed in reports, they can be tuned as per the needs of report like selection of fields can be modified, more filter parameters can be added, datasets can be cached separately from the report etc.. But the reverse is not possible, which means that individual reports consuming a shared dataset cannot override the definition of the shared dataset. In a way, this can be seen as a contract implementation by reports using this dataset. Once you have a report using this shared dataset, the scope defined by the shared dataset is guranteed to be available to consumers of this dataset. This is more desireable from an architectural standpoint.

Summary

Shared Datasets is one of the new features that is available in SQL Server 2008 R2 version. Use this feature to increase reusability of your data logic and practice a more robust architecture design.

Community Server Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Integrating SharePoint Server 2007 with Community Server Membership Databases

clock June 16, 2010 10:22 by author Jervis

This article describes Integrating SharePoint Server 2007 with Community Server Membership Databases. If you’re looking for Community Server and MOSS, you can always consider ASPHostPortal as the alternatives. We give our best for you.

Getting Started

Community Server uses the membership and role providers in ASP.NET. ASP.NET includes the System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider class and the System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider class. These classes communicate with an ASP.NET membership database that is usually created by using the command-line tool, aspnet_regsql.exe.

Modifying ASP.NET Web.config Files

Locate the web.config file of the SharePoint site that you want to use forms-based authentication. By default, the path of this file is the following: local_drive:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80.

Next, locate the web.config file for SharePoint Central Administration.

To locate the webconfig file for SharePoint Central Administration

1. At a command prompt, type inetmgr to launch Internet Information Services (IIS).

2. In IIS, expand the node computer_name (local computer).

3. Expand Web Sites.

4. Right-click SharePoint Central Administration, and then click Properties.

5. Click Home Directory.

6. Under Local Path, note the location of the web.config file. For example,
local_drive:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\7552.

The number, 7552 in this example, indicates the port number on which this site runs.

After locating these two web.config files, add the following XML to both files immediately after the <SharePoint> section and before the <system.web> section. If there is already a <connectionString> section, insert the <add> element contents to the existing section. The following XML example points to a database located on the local computer. The database instance runs on Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (MSDE).

  <connectionStrings>

    <add name="AspNetSqlProvider" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;database=CommunityServer;Trusted_Connection=True" />

  </connectionStrings>

The following example shows how to point to a database on a remote computer.

<add name="AspNetSqlProvider" connectionString="Data server=myRemoteServerName;database=

  CommunityServer;Trusted_Connection=True" />

Next, add the following XML to the <system.web> section of the web.config file of the SharePoint site.

<membership defaultProvider="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider">

      <providers>

        <remove name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" />

        <add connectionStringName="AspNetSqlProvider"

passwordAttemptWindow="10"

           enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true"

           requiresQuestionAndAnswer="true" applicationName="Community_Server_application_instance"

           requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Hashed"

           description="Stores and retrieves membership data from the SQL Server database"

           name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type=

             "System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider,

           System.Web, Version=2.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" />

      </providers>

    </membership>

    <roleManager enabled="true" defaultProvider="AspNetSqlRoleProvider">

      <providers>

        <remove name="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" />

        <add connectionStringName="AspNetSqlProvider" applicationName=" Community_Server_application_instance "

           description="Stores and retrieves role data from the local SQL Server database"

           name="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" type=

             "System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider,

           System.Web, Version=2.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" />

      </providers>

    </roleManager>

Add the following XML to the <system.web> section of the web.config file of SharePoint Central Administration.

<membership defaultProvider="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider">

      <providers>

        <remove name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" />

        <add connectionStringName="AspNetSqlProvider" passwordAttemptWindow="10"

           enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true"

           requiresQuestionAndAnswer="true" applicationName="Community_Server_application_instance"

           requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Hashed"

           description="Stores and retrieves membership data from the SQL Server database"

           name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type=

             "System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider,

           System.Web, Version=2.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" />

      </providers>

    </membership>

    <roleManager enabled="true" defaultProvider=

      "AspNetWindowsTokenRoleProvider">

      <providers>

        <remove name="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" />

        <add connectionStringName="AspNetSqlProvider" applicationName="Community_Server_application_instance"

           description="Stores and retrieves roles data from the local Microsoft SQL Server database"

           name="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider,

           System.Web, Version=2.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=

             b03f5f7f11d50a3a" />

      </providers>

    </roleManager>

Community_Server_application_instance is the name of the Application instance for Community Server. By default, this is usually "dev".

To determine the Community_Server_application_instance name

1. In Community Server, start SQL Server Management Studio and examine the aspnet_Applications table.

2. From the ApplicationName column, select the appropriate application name.

The only difference between the two code examples is the defaultProvider for role manager. This ensures that we can continue to use Windows authentication for SharePoint Central Administration but make Community Server Users discoverable in the People Picker control for the SharePoint site.

After you save the files, you must reset IIS. To do so, in a Command Prompt window, type IISRESET /RESTART.

Enabling Forms-Based Authentication on Windows SharePoint Services

The next step is to enable forms-based authentication for the SharePoint site by using SharePoint Central Administration.

To enable forms-based authentication

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office Server, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.

2. Click Application Management.

3. In the Application Security section, click Authentication Providers.

4. Under Zone, click Default.

5. Choose Forms.

6. In the text boxes, type the MembershipProvider (typically AspNetSqlMembershipProvider) and RoleProviders (typically AspNetSqlRoleProvider), defined in the Membership and Role Manager sections respectively in the XML above, and then click Save.

When you save the changes, Windows SharePoint Services automatically adds an Authentication section to the web.config file for the SharePoint site indicating to IIS to use forms-based authentication instead of the default Windows authentication.

Adding a Community Server Administrator to the SharePoint Site

Next, we add a Community Server administrator to manage the SharePoint site. If there is not one already, create a user in the Community Server site to act as the administrator for the SharePoint site. The user does not have to have any special roles defined. We used the built-in Community Server Admin account.

To add a Community Server Administrator to the SharePoint site

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office Server, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.

2. Click Application Management.

3. In the Application Security section, click Policy for Web application.

4. In the list of Web applications, select the Web application on which you want to operate.

5. Click Add Users.

6. From the Zone list, select Default, and then click Next.

7. In the Users box, type the user name of the administrator account that you created in Community Server.

8. Press Enter or click the check box to resolve the user. If the user name does not resolve, check the web.config settings and connectionString values.

9. After the name resolves, select Full control, and then click Finish.

Adding Community Server Roles to SharePoint Security Groups

Adding individual users to SharePoint security groups manually is time-consuming and creates unnecessary and redundant overhead for site administrators because typically there is already a security group that defines a set of users. The latest release of SharePoint Products and Technologies treat ASP.NET roles as security groups. For example, we can add the Community Server "Registered Users" role to the "Home Visitors" group of the SharePoint site. This assigns any member of the Community Server "Registered Users" role to the "Home Visitors" group. Members of the "Registered Users" role would then have read and view access to the SharePoint site.

To grant access for Community Server users to the SharePoint site

1. In Internet Explorer, browse to the SharePoint site.

2. Log on to the SharePoint site by using the Community Server account to which you assigned full control: the "admin" account with the password assigned to it.

3. Type the user name and password for the administrator account.

4. Click Site Actions.

5. Click Site Settings and then click People and Groups.

6. In the list of security groups, select Home Visitors.

7. Click New.

8. In the Users text box, type Registered Users and then press Enter.

9. After the name resolves, click OK.

10. Test the access with a Community Server user account from the "Registered Users" role. Log on to the SharePoint site. You should see the read-only version of the SharePoint site.

Conclusion

Community Server is a great example of software that is built on top of the ASP.NET flexible membership services. The ASP.NET membership services enables their software to easily interoperate with other products that also use membership services, in this particular case SharePoint Server 2007. The ASP.NET RoleProvider model abstracts Role assignments away from the IT department and to someone closer to this task, so that the IT department can focus on larger issues.

ASP.NET 4 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: What’s New in WCF Data Services

clock June 16, 2010 09:43 by author Jervis

This topic contains brief information about What’s New in WCF Data Services. If you looking for ASP.NET 4 hosting, you can always consider ASPHostPortal. At ASPHostPortal you can get a professional ASP.NET 4 installation with your ASP.NET 4 Hosting account. You can always start from our Portal ONE hosting plan (from @$5.00/month) to get this application installed on your website. So, why wait longer?

The following new Open Data Protocol (OData) version 2.0 functionality is supported in this release of WCF Data Services:

Counting entities in an entity set

A new $count path segment enables you to receive only the total number of resources returned by a URI. A new $inlinecount query option enables you to receive the same total resource count together with the resource data in a single response.

The .NET Framework client library has been updated to enable you to access this row count information in a query response in your application.

Query Projections

Query results can now be modified to include only a subset of properties by using the new $select query option.

The .NET Framework client library has been updated to support projection by using the select clause (Select in Visual Basic) in a LINQ query.

Partial Entity Sets

A data service can now return a partial list of the entities requested by a URI, together with a URI that is used to obtain the next set of entities in the result. The new $skiptoken query option is used to request the next page of results.

The following functionality is new in this release of WCF Data Services:

Server-driven paging

A data service can now be configured to return requested resources as a set of paged responses.

The .NET Framework client library has been updated to enable you to handle paged responses.

Data binding

A new DataServiceCollection class provides simplified binding of data service data to Windows Presentation Framework (WPF) controls. This class inherits from the ObservableCollection class to automatically update bound data when there are changes to data in bound controls.

Streaming of binary resources

An entity can be defined as media link entry, with a link to an associated media resource. This enables you to retrieve and save binary large object data independent of the entity to which it belongs. You can create a data service that returns binary property data as a stream instead of first loading the entire entity, including binary data, into memory. Do this by implementing the IDataServiceStreamProvider interface.

The .NET Framework client library has been updated to allow you to get and set binary properties as a data stream.

Custom data service providers

By implementing a set of new data service provider interfaces, you can use various types of data with a data service, even when the data model changes during execution.
